hi

Is there any way to backup data from Galaxy S automatically to PC? That is, just by connecting it with usb to PC?
with my previous phone (Nokia N97) I could backup all new pics video's, contacts etc. easily, just by connecting it to my pc and having installed the Nokia PC Suite software. All data was backed up automatically without any click of a button, and new pics were put in a dedicated map.
Does anything similar exist for the Galaxy S? Couldn't find this option on the Kies software....
Thx for any help...

When I connect in mass storage mode I have the option to do several actions on connection and can set any of them to occur on connection.

I tried that, thanks,  but it's still not fully automatic this way, you still have to select an option every time you connect...I want somehow to plug in and let it backup any new data, automatically...
How do you make it occur everytime upon connection?

I got the choice on Kies, I'm running version 2.0.0.11014_49.
on the first tab I can check a box who says: sync auto when the device is connected.
on the second tab called: Sync i can choose what i want to sync.

I have never tried it, but guess it will work..

Or else you can try My Phone explorer http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
That one worked fine on my previous phone a SE k850..

Kies - I'm running version 2.0.0.11014_49.
Thnx for that.
If Kies will ever actually allow itself to be udpated (grrr) I'll try that.

Oh, how I long for the days of Palm Pilot's FIFTEEN year-old hotsync .......
Its synch checked for new or updated files of ALL types and descriptions and updated ALL to the most recent, on EITHER the PC or the device AUTOMATICALLY on connection, only alerting me with a message if the item had been updated on both platforms or deleted on one.

Oh hang on a sec. I see another alert  in the Taskbar  .... Kies "Upate (sic) failed - the Internet is not connected".  BBL

Furball what version are you running at the moment?

If it's 1.5 please use the uninstaller and Install the new one Manually.

Peace.

Thnx for that - I'm using 1.5.3.10103_102.

OK, I'll bite ...... :-)
Where does Kies tell us to uninstall before upgrading?

I see the uninstaller here ==> http://au.samsungmobile.com/support/softwaremanuals/software.do?phone_model=GT-I9000&sw_type=SW
but only the older Ver 1.5.1 for download.

Where can I (safely) download the 84943KB version 2.0.0.11014_49 that Kies tells me is available, but can't connect to the 'Net to download?

Here.

Also Download the provided Uninstaller.

First use the Uninstaller Provided by Kies, then use the downloaded Uninstaller.

Restart then Install the new Kies.

P.S. If you don't see the link Click on Software Happy

Peace.

I restarted Kies and reconnected several times, checked all settings ok...result : NO automatic backup what so ever...

Thank you IronSingh - much appreciated.

I don’t see that the Samsung uninstaller does anything that “Add Remove Programs" doesn’t do, but have been able to successfully download and install Ver 2.0.0.11014_49.

I thought I'd make some notes for others thinking of trying it .......

Kies Ver2 is much-changed from ver1:
- no edit of Memo or Calendar, but can synch those to Outlook
- edit of contacts + synch to Outlook, Google, Windows Address Book (WAB) & Yahoo.

I've only ever used Outlook Express, but am now about to move to Outlook to be try the synch of Calendar, Memos and Contacts.

My testing so far with Google sync has been less than satisfactory - it only synchs FROM Google, not from the phone or Kies.

My testing so far shows that while Kies does synch between the phone and the WAB, it creates duplicate entries for data it doesn’t know what to do with, such as email addresses without names and those entries with only name and number or only name and email address.  This is fair enough, but I hope it stops the duplications after I sort the data.

It seems that adding (or at least amending) Notes to either a phone or WAB entry doesn’t get synch’d.
Also, the WAB doesn’t pick up that there are 2 email addresses recorded for some Contacts.  I don’t think it would know what to do with 2 email addresses for 1 entry anyway.  In the past, I’ve always needed to create 2 entries in WAB for people who have a home and work email address.

I was interested to note that its Copyright date is 2009 - it’s been cooking in the pot for quite some time.

Thanks again – Ver 2 certainly looks more promising than Ver 1.

In my previous post I said that the backup with the new Kies version didn't work for me, well I was actually a bit upset, because it did actually work...but, I was upset, coz everytime you connect it seems to backup or read EVERY pic and vid you have on your phone all over again, and it takes AGES (Kies already being a way to slow program), especially when you have lots of pics and vids. There seems to be no way to just only add the -let's say- 5 last pictures I took...
Anyone can prove me wrong on this?

Oh, how I long for the days of Palm Pilot's FIFTEEN year-old hotsync .......
Its synch checked for new or updated files of ALL types and descriptions and updated ALL to the most recent, on EITHER the PC or the device AUTOMATICALLY on connection, only alerting me with a message if the item had been updated on both platforms or deleted on one.

U and me both Furball! Not only the hotsync, but I still haven't found a smartphone that calendar's the way Palm did, with the colored categories that allowed one to easily determine by color what type of appointment is coming up. I know I can get a third party app, but as I can't get my phone's contacts to sync with my PC on its own, why would a third party app, which in all likelihood would need to utilize the phone's native apps before getting to the third party's app data...

Kies, while its APPEARANCE looks better now that we're into version 2.x, still doesn't work yet for me...and I'm a techie! I can manually back up my contents, but trying the Kies Backup process just gives me an error: "An unexpected error prevented the data from backing up"   HUH?

That's it! Gives u a lot to work with, doesn't it??? Anyway....I'm still digging for a solution...if I find one, I'll post it.

@Polaris,

Use the Google cloud to backup the Calender and Contacts.

then use Titanium Backup for the Rest.

Peace.

Yes, it seems that those who want to use smartphones as a PDA for something called WORK (rather than just games, text msgs, photos and videos) have been left somewhat out in the cold.

FWIW, my backup regime is:
- data - Word and Excel docs transferred to PC via USB connection - can edit on PC and phone
- music, photos and videos - USB connection, otherwise all are synched every time
- Memos to Outlook via Kies ver 2 - can edit in Outlook and phone
- Contacts and Calendar to Outlook via MyPhoneExplorer (MPE), available via Market.  (Yes, I had to migrate from Outlook Express) - can edit in Outlook, MPE and phone - MPE doesn't yet handle Memos
- I use App List Backup to record apps and re-install them after any reset.  I believe that OS upgrades are better on an "empty" phone.

Very cumbersome, nowhere near as good as Palm Pilot, but it works reliably .... until Palm Pilot Hotsync or similar is invented.
Unbelievable, really.

I imagine there are more sophisticated methods if I rooted my phone, but I believe that affects warranty and OS upgrades? ..... and I'm being a bit pig-headed ..... why are complete solutions not available 'out-of-the-box'?

Use the Google cloud to backup the Calender and Contacts.
I prefer to keep my data private, but that is a valid option

then use Titanium Backup for the Rest.
Requires root, which I've decided against.  See the bottom of page 8 - http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/samsung-galaxy-s-rooting/what-is-rooting-and-why-you-should-or-shouldn't-care/msg18732
