Howto use Bluetooth and still hear sounds from the built-in speaker?

I use my Galaxy S as a navigation device in my car: the built-in speaker is good enough for this. I also want to connect the phone to my car radio via Bluetooth for hands free talking. This also works quite well on its own.

However I ran into a problem with the combination of the above. As soon as the phone has an active Bluetooth connection to the car radio it stops all sounds via the built-in speaker and apparently wants to stream the sound to the radio. However the radio only plays the sounds when a call is ongoing. Therefore I do not hear the voice of my navigation system at all... :-(

As soon as I terminate the Bluetooth connection I can hear the navigation system via the built-in speaker again just fine.

Therefore my question: is it possible to use Bluetooth and still hear sounds from the built-in speaker? Only calls should be done via Bluetooth, not every sound from the device.

Would be happy about any help!

This is a problem with your Stereo.

It is probably using the older standard. you need 2.1 EDR specification to do that.

What is the make and model of your car?

I don't use the standard radio of my car anymore but have built in my own 2 years ago:
Blaupunkt New Jersey MP68

I frankly have no idea what bluetooth profile it's using but will have a look in the manual when I'm home. Thanks for the suggestion!

So if I understand correctly only profile 2.1 EDR introduced the possibility to differentiate between calls and other audio coming from the phone?

I have found the manual online (see attachment) but it does not state the supported Bluetooth profiles - Bluetooth configuration in English starts on page 98.

This website seems to know the profiles however (found via Google):

I have now found out that I should be able to select Bluetooth streaming as an audio source on my radio. That way I could hear the navigation system again and be able to speak hands free. Another consequence: I would have to listen to music and radio via my Galaxy phone in the future because only sounds coming from there would be played. My car radio would then only play the sounds streamed via Bluetooth.

I will try this out as soon as possible. Thanks for putting me on the right track and helping me realize that it's not an Android issue but rather a lack of features on my radio!

Can you try this?

On your device, goto [Bluetooth Settings], long press on the paired device name (your car stereo)...

Select [Options]...

And un-check [Media]...

I was finally able to test the bluetooth settings in my car and it really seems to be the solution! When I disable "Media" I can still use the phone for calls via bluetooth but the rest of the audio is played back via the built-in speaker of the phone.

Only problem: my Galaxy doesn't seem to remember this setting until the next time I connect to the car radio via bluetooth... It seems I will have to choose this option each time I connect but will make sure over time. Maybe it was just a one time glitch that the setting was reset.
