A big thank to everybody who responded to my Querry on how to Disable 3g in galaxy. When I went to Etisalt to cancell my connection due to this ridiculouse charges, I was told, when you are using wifi in any 3G phone, if the signal is weak, it will automatically switch over to 3G data download. This is the reason we get heafty bill. However, people in the telecom world say it is possible to disable by the telecom providers but ETISALAT is greedy and they milk you out. So all I did is to cancell my line and subsribed to Du Elite plan and its much better.

We work here in UAE and the telecommunication charges are one of the highest in the world. I am using the Galaxy for a month now and paid huge bill  of 400 US $ unnecessarily for Data Download though I never surfed the web through 3G. My telephone company says in 3G phones when you are using the Wifi if the signal strength is weak, the phone will attempt through 3G hence my charges are?
1. Could somebody tell me how to Disable 3G in Galaxy?  I saw this option in Iphone 3Gs ?

2. If Disable is possible will I be able to use the phone for Calls?

3. Does the GPS in builit, when active, use the 3G for programs such as Navigation and Google Maps?

I appreciate members could help me as I cannot sustain the charges from my telephone company and do not want to give up my Galaxy either?

Thanks

Hi arowana,
I had a similar issue when I got my SGS although I didn't have such high charges.
The main problem is that apps are always updating.
If you can access the Android market there are many apps to disable/enable 3G such as APNdroid.
If you can't then you can create a fake VPN and switch to it when you want the 3G turned off.
Have a look here for details:-

It is not off by default on Etisilat on Pre-Paid.

It is just as long as you don't have the settings, you can't use it.

But Android has a Database of settings so it gets automatically selected at the Rate is.

1 Dhs for 1 Kb.

1 Dhs is 0.27 USD

to put it in Comparison there are 1024 Kb in 1 MB.

so that is 1024 Dhs for 1 MB yes I know Ludacris  Eyes Rolling.

1024 Dhs ~ 278.80 USD

Now when you subscribe for data plan you get a better deal.

The International Currency name for Dhirams is AED but I am more used to Dhs.

Peace.

What you need to disable is the Use of packet data not the 3G. 3G is just connection type.
If your pocket data activated, your phone will download, refresh and update. To turn it off:

Settings--Wireless and network--Mobile networks--Use packet data

If you want to save battery life you can change the Network mode to GSM only. (on default it should be on GSM/WCDMA auto mode where WCDMA is 3G. When you are on GSM the phone works on lower frequency which means consumes less power, WCDMA (3G) is a faster network type--needs more power--less battery life. If you dont use your phone on mobile internet go back to GSM (if your network provider supports it)

Without pocket data you can still make phone calls.

Your phone with the built in GPS works a different way than the GPS what you can buy for your car. In that GPS you have the country map built in but in your phone you don't which means when you use your phone as a GPS navigator it needs to refresh and load the map -- it will need internet connection -- you will need to have your pocket data turned on or you need to connect to a wi-fi network to see your position on the map.

can you confirm that this 3g is off on etisalat especially on PREPAID subscription?

because if i turn off my wifi, it doesn't connect to any online services, i mean all...

on Maps app.. data connection lost, retrying...
on Google Earth.. it says offline

i strongly believe that if you are not subscribed to any data plan with etisalat,, it will not work hence on prepaid.

---

this 3g/edge is available on iphone defaulted ON, but as the OP said, there is really an option to turn it off just not to have deduction on the credit balance.

Hi, Thanks for your suggestions for my querry on 3G disabling option which I did. After this another strange thing happened. When I tried to download an app using Market, it would not download any. It just shows the icon downoloading for few seconds but then disappears. I tried find the files use file manager apps but nothing could be found. Simply it does not download but using Samsung Apps it does.
I reset the systems and activated the 3G Enable options but yet, the Market would not download?

Can somebody help me?  I tried to fix one problem and another one came?

thanks
