how can i make my battery last longer?!

The battery life was surprised me. But now, after two or three weeks of normal use, it seems to be okay. There are many ways to increase battery life but I'm afraid it will reduce the ' beauty '  of this phone. Just use it normally, the battery life will be okay IMO. Just like computer and other electronic device you don't want excessive usage of memory, etc  when you don't need it

I use a bunch of applications to help me manage battery, namelly:
2G/3G - Helps to change 3G settings fast whenever I need faster web access
Auto Wifi - Disconnects Wifi when I leave a Wifi area
BTCall - Enables bluetooth when I have a incomming call. Great for the car.

 

the most important is the background data...turn it off.....  THANKS FOR THIS TIP MAN .. the difference in my battery coz of that one option....

I picked up my galaxy S last friday and gave it a charge and let it loose

12hrs later!!! it was demanding to be fed, and went to bed 4 hours after that eek!

i gave it another charge and let it loose again, and sure enough 20 hours later it was

dead. Not good, and i dont want to be charging the dam thing every day

Determined not to be beaten, i went in and had a good look at what was running.

Basically i have turned off all data syncs, data locations twitterbook, updates, etc..

Now using it to make calls & some bluetooth it managed 3 days and 20 hours before

dying

So far its been on for 8 hrs with blutooth turned on, and battery @ 92%

and a brief 2 minutes on GPS

Another thing that worth's being said is how to charge your battery. Because (sadly) it's a li-ion battery and not li-po, you need to complete the charging cycle, otherwise you risk damaging it.Don't use the phone while charging, don't charge the battery partially then unplug it, etc. I close my phone to let it fully charge and i can sense the battery is getting stronger.
I don't know why samsung didn't chose lipo batteries.
Do this about 5 times at first and the battery will be better.

I LOOOVE my Galaxy S.  It's probably the most awesome phone out there today.  iPhone KILLER!
Only problem.  You cannot actually USE the phone...it's only nice as a decoration, or to switch on and brag to your friends, because...if you EVER actually USE it, the battery dies!
I am SOOO disappointed in this, I cannot tell you.  NONE of these "awesome" features mean ANYTHING in practuical daily use, because, if you USE them, you have no phone (its battery will die within about 4 to 6 hours MAX!)

I read all the awesome reviews, and was WAAAYYY impressed with it, but, the first time I actually tried to USE it, woah - no joy...no battery, meaning NO PHONE.

What sense is therein to have this wonderful device, with it's real-time updates/syncs to facebook/google/myspace etc etc etc (which you can't use if you want to save battery), its awesome live wallpapers (which you can't use if you want battery life), its use of layars (which you can't use if you want to have battery), it's use of google maps and gps (which you cannot use if you want a battery), its use of latitude (which you can't use if you want a battery), its HD video camera (which you can't use if you want a battery), its bluetooth ability (which you have to keep off all the time, and only switch on when exchanging data if you want a battery), and its awesome integration with your home wifi network (which you can't use if you want any battery), or it's AMAZING ability to stream video via ALLSHARE while you're sitting on your patio/porch (which, again, you cannot use if you want any battery that actually lasts a whole dday - say 12 to 14 hours)?

It is such a contradiction of its claims, since, if you want to use ANY of these things to the full capacity that the phone is "said" to be able to do...your phone will only work 25% of the time that you own it, since, the rest of the time it will be in your bedroom/study/office, busy charging!

If anyone knows of alternative battery options or anything like that, please let us know.

These tips here on the forum to save battery life are stunning, and they work.  in fact, I use most of them, since I actually NEED the cellphone to be ON all day in my line of work...BUT, I coulda got a cheap nokia for $50 if I JUST WANTED A CELLPHONE - I WANTED A SMARTPHONE, I WANTED THE "iPhone KILLER" - I wanted an awesome Android device - but, sadly, even though I PAID for that, I only effectively got a relatively decent cellphone.  If you use any of the features, you have to accept that you have no cellphone for the rest of the day.

Thanks for the battery saving tips, they do help...but, again...in the bigger scheme of things, they only make the Galaxy S LESS of an awesome device, since they REMOVE features, and only by "removing" these features, does the actual cellphone last for a day.

Again...anyone with ideas about alternative battery options or possible solutions from Samsung would be much appreciated.

It's like buying a car, but it will only run if you take out the seats, remove the windscreen and don't ever change gears!

Cheers all, sorry for the negative comments, but please know...I really still think the Galaxy is an awesome device.  My disappointment is simply that the poor battery LITERALLY negates it down to a simple, common cellphone, for which one should be paying about $50.
