Perhaps some of you guys have heard about the "SGH-i897"

It's a Samsung phone with what is essentially the exact same specifications as the Samsung Galaxy S. Strangely though, the leaked pictures of the phone don't look like the Galaxy S.

Check out both of these articles and decide for yourself; is the SGH-i897 just the Samsung Galaxy S for AT&T paired up with some leaked images of the wrong device, is it a version of the Galaxy S with a new look, or are they completely different devices?

One thing I can tell you is that the theories of a Snapdragon processor are probably just coming from people who don't know that Samsung has their own 1 GHz CPU.

Pictures of the mystery device in the second link.

Yep, I've heard about it. Here's the post on the topic (rather than re-typing  Happy )

This link shows the i897 which seems to be coming to AT&T. It's similar in most regards to the Galaxy S, but with a snapdragon processor and a slightly different casing/form factor.

This is in line with what my contact at Samsung has been telling me. The Samsung line regarding the US release is that the Galaxy S may not come to the US, but that a phone with comparable features may be released here.

In essence, whenever I push on my contact to get more info, they seem to imply that a different, but equivalent handset may be coming here instead.

No, but I should have continued your thread. Credit where it's due and all that. But, since I've already got my ball rolling... :p

Check out this rumor: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/06/01/att-picking-up-htc-aria-samsung-eternity-ii-samsung-captivate/

It says a device called the "Samsung Captivate" with the model # i897 will be coming to AT&T soon. Pair this with other rumors that the Galaxy S is about to launch in multiple international markets in June or July, and it seems to indicate that the Samsung Galaxy S and the "Captivate" / i897 are very closely related.

I've been reading about that. All indications seem to be, from the zillion versions of this I've read, that the true Galaxy S will be appearing on T-Mobile's doorstep while the i897 <corny name>Captivate</corny name> will be the extra-special ATT version which may or may not have all the same features, but (I think) a more attractive casing. I've also noticed that, while there are hints of the upcoming Galaxy S launch (110 countries, but we're not saying which ones) but nothing at all about possible release dates for the i897.

What do you think?

Oh, I forgot to mention. At least one site talked about the fact that the i897 will differ from the Galaxy S in at least one way that is already known (apart from cosmetics): It will have 2GB of storage instead of 8 or 16GB.

It makes me sad.

My question is this.  If the i897 is a "special" AT&T model, will it be upgraded to 2.2 (FroYo) like Samsung says they will do with the Galaxy S?  If it doesn't get the update, what's the point of getting it.
I also like the cosmetics of the i897 better than the Galaxy S.  It's sleeker, sexier.  But everyone has their opinions.
As for the 2GB of memory, my understanding is that is memory dedicated to RAM.  It may still have 8 or 16 GB of total memory.  But I may have understood the last part incorrectly.

If the i897 has 2GB of application RAM, that would be truly unprecedented. The best I've seen is around 768MB on the incredible. Most are in the 256-512MB range.

EVO has 1 gb.

I was mistaken then. Still, I would be very surprised to see 2GB of application memory in a phone at this point.

I can't say for certain that is correct.  But I do recall reading this in the last few days.  Unfortunately I didn't link it, and I can't remember exactly where I read it.  But then again, they keep saying it will have a Snapdragon CPU too.  And as has been stated here previously, that makes absolutely no sense at all.  So the RAM numbers could be wrong too.
