According to Engadget (apple fanboys) had a post that Samsung claimed that the Retina Display is good but not AMOLED.
It has a lower res but it still must be a good match, if anyone can testify to which is better.

Well I for can't wait for this match-up to finally happen.

Iphone 4 release is close. But since there are no Super AMOLED phones in the US yet.

Then we must turn to Europe and hope to see this war finally started.

They will have my phone, the Samsung Wave to matchup to the Iphone 4 and we will finally see who is the true display winner, Super AMOLED or IPS.

But IMO, Super AMOLED will cleary win in the vibrancy of the colors, contrast ratio, and viewing angle.

Iphone 4 IPS will win in pixel density, and image sharpness but that is not due to IPS, but the high resolution.

Let's wait and see.

I believe that the Retina Display does win with the sharpness and smoothness.  But the question is if they are commenting about the rendered fonts or the pictures themselves.  If we are talking about pictures, we have a huge problem.  Pictures can be gif, png, jpg, tiff, and what else... plus we have to think about the display rendering of the iPhone OS itself.  It gets messy.  (to be fair, so does the Galaxy S)
But I think Engadget did a very good job with the pictures and videos.  It's real data this time than the theoretical stuff we have been throwing around.  IMHO, Samsung Galaxy S is FTW!  Happy
I wrote about comparisions and screen stuff in http://careace.net.  Just say'in hi guys!  (http://bit.ly/aqae7S)

I saw a comparison between the two on
. Unfortunately it was in Italian so I didn't understand that much of what was said but one very visible thing to me was that colors and black/white were much better on the Galaxy S. The iPhone 4 was of course sharper due to it's higher ppi but from what I could see the difference in color and contrast will be much more noticable so judging from this I'd definitely say that the Super AMOLED is superior to the Retina.

As for smoothness mentioned above, that doesn't have anything to do with the actual display. It's actually the Super AMOLED that has the clearly faster response time. The smooth scrolling etc is due to that Apple is using the GPU to do that, while Android for some reason still isn't utilizing that. It's not that big of a difference with the Galaxy S but slower phones show lesser results.
