This just started over the last week or so.  I am running Froyo build  FROYO.UCKB1.  kernel 2.6.32.9.  Firmware 2.2
Phone is SGH I897.
About once a day I make a call and it says dialing but nothing happens.
I can go back to the main screen but the phone stays off the hook.  I cannot get the phone to hangup.  The only way to get the phone to turn off is to power down.
There do not seem to be any software updates available.
I have searched online for similar issues but cannot find any.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Maybe your phone doesn't have enough memory to execute a call. Open your task manager: long press home. And once there, end all running apps or you could go to the ram manager option and clear up memory. If things improve after doing this, it means you have too many things running in the background. Best to uninstall or check your app settings. Usually, auto-sync is the main culprit here.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I checked that when I tried to terminate the phone "app" somehow so it would restart.  The memory usage is very low.  All 4 memory monitors are low.  There seems no way to force quit the phone app or at least I don't know which of the android programs are for the phone so reluctant to start terminating them at random.

After clearing up memory in task/ram manager, did you try to make a call?

Don't bother with phone app, just end the apps listed in task manager and clear up ram.

Also, long press power and end network connection and make sure you're in an area with great signal before you try making a call.
