Bought my new SGS on Thursday and it has refused to play music for me and now is refusing to play videos.  It played youtube videos on Friday night for me but since then won't play any other videos.

It hasn't been updated or anything.  It hasn't even been connected to a computer since Friday night.

I have tried dragging and dropping music files directly onto my SD card and playing from there but that also won't work.

Does anyone have any advice?

I bought this phone as I was looking forward to getting rid of my ipod and no longer having to carry around a phone and a music player and just having it all in one but that's not looking likely now!

Well, that's unexpected behaviour.

Regardless of how it's marketed as a perfect multimedia phone, there ARE a few codecs it won't be able to play.

Regardless, if it refuses to play anything... why not do a factory reset? That ought to restore everything to default. Word of warning though: it'll erase everything on your phone. Oh, but files on an external SD card won't be touched. Just unmount and remove it, to be on the safe side.

Oh, and backing your stuff up would be a great idea (calendar, memo, contacts, etc). You'll need Kies to do that though.

Cheers.

I factory reset the phone and didn't reinstall kies to my laptop, instead i just dragged and dropped everything onto my SD card and now everything is working perfect.  Thanks for that!

Haha, you're very much welcome. Rep if you appreciated the advice. Thanks Happy)

Oh, by the way, I do the same thing; I just use Mass Storage mode to transfer files to and from my Galaxy S (it's less of a hassle that way, I guess). But you WILL need Kies to backup some things such as the Schedule, Memo, and Diary app data. I know that not everyone bothers with those, but just making sure.

Oh, and unless an OTA update is available where you live, you'll need Kies to update the firmware of your Galaxy S when (and if) Samsung releases Gingerbread in your area.

Cheers.

I also get this issue very often. However, in order to fix it, I just reboot the phone (hold power button > Power off). Then, everything works as expected.

This is annoying, I recently updated the OS version (t-mobile supplied via kies, but not firmware update) and then I did a factory reset, which solved some issues, but I still experience problems when playing mp3. Not all the time, there must be some kind of trigger for this... because it works fine all day but it seems that the next day, you can't play mp3 files anymore (or videos) and I have to reboot the phone.

I think there're 2 things that may cause this:

The first, I open the task manager a lot and notice that the app doubleTwist runs by itself every now and then so I close it, since I have no music going on (just the app, not the service).

The other thing I think its messing with the phone is charging it. Before sleep, I charge my phone using wall charger, and when I wake up I notice it won't play mp3 anymore. Maybe something to do with being charged for too long (7-9 hours) but that doesn't make sense, but yeah, it seems like some OS issue.

Mikesoft,

Have you seen this thread?

Looks like you're problem is quite similar to the one being described here.
