Got this in a Google Alert for SGS:

New Kies Update Hints Gingerbread For Samsung Galaxy S Phones Prepped
http://goo.gl/Xek26
| Samsung Kies 2 software update rolls out, hints Android 2.3 near
| Now members over at XDA Developers forums are reporting that Samsung has started to roll out a new version of Kies, the program used to update Samsung Android devices to the latest Android version. A new version of keys basically signals a new Android update, hence Gingerbread.

Got all excited and upgraded my Kies only to find that the Froyo  firmware on my SGS is still the latest :-(

Well, finished updating Kies, but still no Gingerbread update.

Whenever I look at the Basic Information tab, it reads:
"This version of the device cannot be updated"

I'm on Froyo, firmware version reads the following:
PDA:JP8 / PHONE:JP8 / CSC:JP8 (GLB)

Any idea what that means? It's plain gibberish to me.

Also, the "About phone" menu reads:

Firmware version:
2.2

Baseband version:
I9000DXJP8

Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
root@SE-S604 #1

Build number:
FROYO.DXJP8

Incidentally, I'm a bit worried about that "root" under the Kernel version. I have never rooted this device, so I'm wondering what it means.

Cheers.

Thanks, that was niggling at me a bit. Still, though, anyone know when the official release of 2.3's gonna start rolling out in SE Asia? I recall that the date for the European release was March 20, but no one's gotten it yet, to my knowledge.

In spite of the much shorter upgrade cycle, I'm starting to feel like it's the Froyo upgrade fever all over again. Happy)

If it says " This version of the device cannot be updated " then it means that your Area Code on ur firmware is wrong i.e. After installing XXJPY it becomes something different so i changed it to XEU and voila......... all my phone functions are ok and KIES telles me that it is the latest update available.

Sorry for not having technical language for Area Code but i do not remember the technical word for it Crying . anyway u can search for XEU inandroid context and u will get the code to change it on ur phone........... cheers..........

XEU will always get the Update first.

That is the "AS IS" Stockiest of Firmware. (I know Stockiest is not a word but roll with me).

Peace.

Pardon the inane question, but what is XEU? Does that have something to do with Europe, perhaps? HUH?

And about my version of the firmware is, like, the most basic version there is? Personally, I think that's a good thing. I mean, what with there being less bells and whistles to meddle with, right?

Hi,

when you flash a new ROM, you'll get a folder in /system/csc.
In this folder there are several "CSC" like XEU, XEH,O2, etc.
This CSC refers your carrier. When you choose e.g. TMH, you choose the apps. of T-Mobile Hungary. I'm a Hungarian, but don't use it. XEU is for UK & IRE (O2 UK, Orange UK, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone UK, TESCO, BT Mobile, H3G, Asda, O2 IRL, Vodafone IE, Meteor, H3G IE, Tesco Mobile Ireland).

SGS_GTI9000 Firmware: Android 4.0.3  Modem: XXJVT  Kernel: Stock
OC/UV:no.
ROM: ICS
Launcher: ICS.
(If a think is worth doing at all it's worth doing well.)
