Well, the title says it all.

I'm getting kinda sick of waiting for the official update to roll out here in the Philippines, and if the fact that the European update got halted is anything to go by, Gingerbread's gonna be a long time coming, in spite of the fact that Samsung was the first manufacturer to release a Gingerbread phone (the Nexus S).

So, I'm considering Darky's ROM, which people say is a great alternative. Just wondering, though: What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to the official ROM? I know that TouchWiz is out of the question; While that may be a bonus for some, I'll miss it, personally.

Anyone manage to get their hands on an official firmware release of Gingerbread? How's it doing so far?

P.S.
I kinda need to know exactly what I need to do to get Darky's ROM up and running. Will I need to root my phone? If so, is it possible to un-root, it, restoring all previous settings? Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

What I've learned/done since the time of the previous post:

1.) Yes, you can undo rooting your phone. Whether or not the guy at the Service Center can tell is unknown to me, though.

2.) Currently on Darky's 9.4. I'm pretty satisfied, though I think I shot myself in the foot; I was pretty sure I'd downloaded the 9.5 version. Ah, well.

3.) Darky's v10 ROM is gonna be based on Android 2.3.3, so I'm gonna update to that as soon as a stable release is out.

4.) Rooting, flashing, and installing custom ROMs isn't as difficult as I'd once thought. Not to say that I wasn't really tense just a few minutes back (No, really; I just finished installing Darky's Big Smile )

saszseb mate. Your link doesn'y actually specify pros and cons of DarkyROM EE or RE. I'm on RE (I think) and I was looking up other ROMs. Darkys always seems to come out on top and your link simply takes you to an install tutorial by yourself.

Any pros and cons out there?

Flash it, and you'll be able to compare the ROMs.
There is a bad news about Darky.

Hey saszseb. Yeah, I've seen the Darky DEAD! post. He'll still be around!

And with regards to pros and cons, I've mentioned before that I go by a certain saying: " do it once, do it right". And everywhere I've looked, DarkyROM has always come out on top so flashed it ;-)

Loving it! Also recently discovered a lot of other ROMs that I didn't even know existed! Either way, I'm happy with DarkyROM v10.2 but I really wish there was a thread or something with list of ROMs and pros and cons beside them Sadly, not come across it yet :-(

No matter... DarkyROM rules!

Akhtar.

We'll I'm pretty new to all this but I followed the instructions and installed Darky 10.2 to my Samsung Galaxy GTI9000. My Galaxy ran rather poorly on gingerbread but, wow! Darky saved the day it is awesome and my phone now runs faster and smoother than ever before.SPB Shell constantly froze on Gingerbread but runs like lightening on Darky. No hassles or problems after one week of use. Great rom!
