oday i got my samsung captivate! I was excited til i started playing around with it and started losing my battery very quickly. i know i'm supposed to charge it the first time for 6 hours but... this is my first smart phone and i need help figuring out how i can make the battery last longer between charges. I downloaded the task killer app so i won't be multi-tasking but please let me know if there's anything that i missed.

I think the best way to start is to find out what is actually using the battery, once you have a good  understanding what's been running and what has used battery most, you can then tailor the way you use your phone, apps, data sync etc. in order to improve your battery life.

To check what has been using the battery, go Menu > Settings > About Phone > Battery use

This was just the thing i've been looking for! Thanks a bunch man. Turns out my display was draining my battery even though i had it dimmed, so after a little bit of fiddling around i think i slowed down the drainage

Yes mine do the same, display has the highest percentage of all. Also, a new battery will take a few days to settle down, I was a bit worried about the battery life as it did drain out very quick when I first got it, but a few days later, it started to settle down. Now it can easily last me a full day with common usage like check emails, phone calls, internet, wifi constantly on.....etc

Turn off 3G data if you are not using data network. Either switch it to 2G (data network is still on but downgraded to EDGE) or use APNDroid to switch it off the data network completely. This will help extend your battery life. I can now easily get thru the whole day with a full charge.

You can still access the Internet with 2G but at a lower data speed. If it is just for email purposes, I find it tolerable on the 2G network.

A task killer can help to save battery but be careful using it.  I would read about them on several of the Android websites out there before using one.  Also, I turn wifi off when out on the town and I turn GPS off when I'm at home.  Live wallpaper can suck battery big time so if you are not able to charge your phone then turn it off.  Just tinker with your phone and you will figure a good formula that works best for you.  Have fun exploring!
