Last monday we had a 12 hour staff party at the job. Wet and Wild.
The lobster and crab was great and the drinks tasted fine. But something
must have been poisonous or maybe someone spiked my drink. Anyway I
ended up falling overboard as we docked back at the port, carrying two
cell phones, one of which was my three week old Galaxy S2, both of
them on at the time.

I was pulled up quite quickly and took out my batteries right away. The
Galaxy must have fallen out of my pocket as I changed into dry clothes.
So when I came home I did not even have it with me. Next morning, full
of regrets, I went back to the boat and found the Galaxy on the floor, still wet.

I took it home and thinking that it could not get any wetter  than it
already was, I put it in a small bucket with lukewarm tap water to rinse
out any salty residue from the brackish sea water we have here. I also
added a drop of dish water detergent and shook it around for a good
while to clean out other pollutants. Rinsed out and let it simmer in fresh
water for several hours.
Later I bought a litre of destilled water and had the Samsung soak in
that for some 10 hours, before hanging it up to dry out.

For several days I maintained a routine of having the smartphone lie
in the sun inside a window during days, and at nights in an airtight
plastic bucket together with the type of silicone gel desiccants that
often come packed with electronics when you buy them new.

The following weekend I fit a new battery and tried switching the
unit on. Nothing, dead as a Dodo! Sunday evening I gave up all
hope and decided to bite the bullet and ordered a new one. It arrived
wednesday.
Then a girl at the job mentioned that she had had a wet cellphone
spring to life after about two months. So I made another try swithcing
the 'old one' on. And voilá, it came on! It works fine, as far as I can see.
Now I have two.

The older Ericsson plain cell phone is still dead though.

Ymmv.

Glad to hear it recovered. Thanks for the post - I imagine many people would have thrown it away. Well worth keeping it for a while it seems.

Seeing that my post has become a sticky I must add some further info.

As mentioned the S2 came on fine after some ten days of drying out. I checked all functions and everything was OK, including pictures and recorded video. I had it on for several hours and then left it lying around while I went out. When I came back it was off and I did not remember switching it off. Turned it on again next day, and all was fine. That is when I wrote my post about this seemingly successful outcome.

The following day it was off again. I decided to plug in the charger. After a few hours charging it would not switch on at all. Next day same, so I replaced the battery with a fully charged one from my new S2. Still would not come on.

Then I put it in an airtight container with a good handful of dry, uncooked, rice. Left it sitting inside a window facing the sun for two or three days. Then it came on!
But as soon as I entered the settings, to switch on the wifi, the S2 powered down on its own. Next day same.

So someting is not right with it, but it seems to be recovering. Now I will leave it with the rice for a while. I assume there is still some humidity trapped inside somewhere. My plan is that leaving the whole container in the sun will warm up the phone, evaporate some moisture that will then be absorbed by the rice.

I do think it was a bad move to plug in the charger as early as I did. After all I had had the phone submerged in water for many hours. It is not only that there was water on top of its components, some may have crept inside maybe a capacitor or some such, that takes even longer to get out.

Patience I think, is a good motto if you find yourself in similar circumstance.

Hope you'll report again, after further "Drying" process.

Thanks.

Certainly, I think this may be a good time for a further update.

I had the S2 in its rice bucket for several days. Every day I tried switching it on.
It did indeed come on, but within a minute it complained about the battery being
low on power and switched off by itself. Since I had another phone and battery
I changed to a battery that I knew for sure was fully charged, but same reaction.

I dried out the silica gel in the oven and then put the phone back with that desiccant.
Every day I switched it on and had the same reaction as before, low on power,
recharge. I had more or less accepted that this phone needs to be sent to a
Samsung service centre as soon as the summer holidays are over.

But then, one day it came on and stayed on, good as new. So I fitted an sd card
and a 3G phone card. Everything works like a charm!
Now I am on my third day running this swimboy around the clock without any hint
of a problem. I have switched it off and on several times, taken the battery out etc.
NO problems at all! I hope it stays this way.
Now it is just over a month since it was properly wet.

Thanks for the update.

Glad that it survived.

So, Galaxies = 2, toilet = 0, sea = 0, small bowl of water in the sink = 1.

Just to tell you that the previously wet and dead Galaxy S2 is still fine.
I use it as my main phone every since two months now with no problems
at all. If you hear no further from me on this issue it means all is still well.

I have put up the newer Galaxy for sale. Don't think I will need it.

I haven't tried this, but I hear it works!

I know you said it's working, but Take the phone and remove the back of the phone. If it were me, I would try to open the phone as much as possible, remembering where everything goes, and stick it in a container of UNCOOKED RICE. This will absorbe any moisture that is inside and hopfully save the device. I know it's kinda late for this, as any moisture you may have had, has evaporated by now...but it's good to know this for the future...

Oh its miracle  Cool that you did many practices, your phone doesn't even vibrate. So when you put the phone like crap, it's now working fine. Generally if unfortunately our phone drink water, we put the phone under sun light for an hour or so, it will get switch on. We did like this and switched on many phones.

Nice man, sometimes with these new phones I feel like they have no chance when it comes to water or a fall, but somehow they still do.

In my case it was salt water, at least brackish, and not entirely clean either. It is not enough to have it dry out, you really need to get rid of the salt and all other contaminations.

One big reason for me posting this story is to tell people not to be afraid of wetting it more if you think that is needed to clean it of contaminants.

PS I _have_ tried this, and I know from my own experience that it actually works.

Btw, the phone is still fine. I use it all the time and love this thing.

I dropped my galaxy s2 into the toilet, er,  pre any toilet activity.........I got it out quick but the screen shimmered and went dark, I got the battery out a few seconds later. Once home I dismantled it completely as per the guide on you tube and then left it in a tub of dried rice with a lamp left on to warm it.....after a few days.....I assembled the phone and put in a spare (charged) battery and it wouldnt turn on, nothing what so ever, so I am just waiting for a replacement to be delivered partly paid for by my accidental damage section of my home insurance (£100 excess - ouch)
Meanwhile I am re-aquainting my self with my old Motorola Pebl!

I guess Ill leave it in the rice for a few weeks and see what happens
