If on the homepage you press "add" and then "shortcuts" it gives you a rather specific list of shortcuts you can add.

What I want to do, for an example, is to display my phone status page with one press by creating a shortcut to it that I can put on the home page. Can that be done, and if so, how?

If it can't be done, it is strange that my previous much-less-smart phone could do it and this one cannot..

i reckon!  annoying... i want to be able to turn off my roaming data to save battery.

This is easily done on my htc, via creating a shortcut to where ever i want. Not sure why they only let you do a few that they think might be required.  Probably google's fault,  i mean it's andriod OS that's locking it down.

It is three days now since my original query, so this being the star forum it is, I assume what I want cannot be done or someone would have said.

That is a *serious* shortcoming of the android/samsung device, as presented: that it can't find you an easy way to implement menu actions.

Can the iphone do it, I wonder?

Not sure if this answers your question, but if you hold down the power  button for a couple of seconds, you'll be presented with four options, one of which allows you to turn data on/off. Similarly, if you drag down the bar which displays the time/network coverage etc, you can switch wireless, Bluetooth, GPS on and off.

Interesting, thanks.. but not what I am looking for.

As one example, if I want to know (say) the charge level of the phone, I have to:
- touch bottom left below screen
- touch "settings"
- scroll down
- touch "about phone"
- touch "status"
..before I can see it, which is five operations. My old phone would let me make a shortcut, to do it in one keypress. The SII should be able to do that too

To see the battery charge, you can download apps like BatteryLife ver1.3.3 and place it on your main homescreen.
Hope that is what you are looking for

thank you for the suggestions, guys.. I do have a battery level indicator now [it turns out there are dozens] and I also found that if you press and hold a blank section of the home page(s) then it brings up a widget list you can select from, which includes some useful shortcuts. I see that there are lots of shortcut widgets/apps on the market too.

A new an improved version, the Samsung Galaxy S2 has just been announced and looks set to follow in its predecessor's footsteps. An upgraded touchscreen, digital camera and new version of the Android software provide this handset with a very appealing spec list, and brings it bang up to date to the point where it can compete with many more popular smartphone models from various manufacturers. The handset measures up at a pocket friendly 125.3x 66.1x 8.5mm, making it one of the slimmest smartphones available, and its impressive lightweight of 116 grams makes it a pleasure to use. The font is dominated by a huge 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen. This in itself is packed with features; multi touch input support, touch sensitive shortcut panel, proximity and accelerometer sensors and Swype text input system all combine to make this one of the most impressive touchscreens on any phone currently available.iPhone 5 release date
