Just downloaded v2.3.3 for Orange via Kies.  Installed first time no problem.

As documented elsewhere, the start up time seems to be slower but once working is snappier.  All apps seem to work fine including the reconnect to Exchange.

So far so good.   Sticking out tongue

Hi Tim

I had a firmware update come through today via Kies whilst charging my Orange-branded Galaxy S which I have not accepted yet. My current version is PDA:JS4/PHONE:JP4/CSC:JS4 (ORA). The latest firmware Kies has picked up is  PDA:JV7/PHONE:JV2/CSC:JV5 (ORA). I rang Orange as I was unsure whether this was a legitimate upgrade having read stories of other users having had issues. Subsequently, they advised me that Orange have not released Gingerbread 2.3 and are aware of problems users have had with firmware updates from Kies this week. Apparently, Orange will give customers an update "over the air".

Could you confirm if you upgraded to the latest firmware that I mention above. I know I have a good few months left on the warranty of my phone as I only just got the Galaxy S recently.

Thanks
Sanj

I hadn't heard of any problems with unauthorised releases so I just accepted the download as provided by Kies.  Hmmm.

Still, all is well although I did do a hard reset the day after the firmware was installed, just to clear any old code out.  This was because on the second day of using the new release I found apps taking longer and longer to load.

Following the reset and reloading my apps and reconnecting email accounts, everything seems to be going fine.

Thanks Tim. I'm not as clever as most people here who have rooted their phones hence am only making update via Kies. Some forums have stated that Orange will make an update "over the air" circa 20th June. As a new SGS user, I really cannot confirm whether Orange do updates over the air. I'm going to wait for the new update as I'm not prepared to make the current update to JV5. Thanks for your response in any case.

I've never had an over the air update for my SGS, only via Kies so will be interested to see what actually happens.  Over the past 10 months or so I've upgraded twice via Kies and it's been pretty straightforward, I wonder how the over the air update would work, not least given the size of the firmware file.

BTW, and for what it's worth, I too am not overly technical so updating via Kies has been my only option as I'm not prepared to root my phone, no matter how easy some people on this site seem to think it is.   Smile

Just thinking about the over the air option.  If you go to Apps, Settings, About Phone, Software Update - there is an option to Check for Update.  You need an account at Samsung.co.uk to enable you to login, but once done you can check for new versions.

I just did this and was informed there was no update for my phone.  Not surprising given my new install of Gingerbread.

Thought you might want to check this out as any update provided should be official.  I'm guessing the update will in fact come to you over the air.

Hello Guys,

I have recently upgraded my 2.2 froyo on Samsung Galaxy S to 2.3.3 .
 I am also Orange customer.

All worked fine except the Data connection.
It works for me fine. But although i switch it off keeps on turning ON.

I have asked the samsung guys for a fix they said Orange has not released 2.3.3.

Orange site says use kies to update.
And KIES doesnt say it is Ginger or froyo... strange...

But have read some review where the data connection (3G/gprs ) didnot work at all , some of them have to reset to factory settings to get it work...

frankly - i see no major differences and dont  feel worth 2.3.3 update.
Heard honey comb is good may wait and see..

Cheers,

Hmm, maybe the update option now in Settings is part of v2.3.3 itself.  I don't recall if was there in the Froyo release.

I've been checking Kies on an almost nightly basis, and after reading this thread yesterday gave it a go and this time success!!  Smile

I also noticed that it didn't delete all of my internet bookmarks, something that Froyo did a few months ago.

Just re-shuffleing my home screen contents around and it'll be done.

I'm still waiting to be wowed by some sort of major difference mind you, but as yet I've only spotted minor things.

I'm also watching the battery indicator with fingers crossed too.

Sorry...this is what the user says....

"Well I installed the questionable version of GB about a week ago and initially had an issue with the data connection which was resolved just by switch off and on. The phone is performing well with no issues.

More worryingly the battery life had dropped markedly from 2.2.1 so I decided to do a factory reset (3 button) drain the battery completely and charge over night.

What you see below defies explanation. The battery was still showing 71%!!!

Now as usual I switch off things like BT, 3G, wireless unless I use them and I appreciate I ain't been using my phone too much over the last couple of days, few calls, text messages, checked Twitter and Facebook and updated a few apps but even so I've never had battery life like this. "

I upgraded using samsung Kies, and my data connection broke, eventually my wifi also broke. I contacted orange, and they said that they havent realesed the 2.3.3 for orange galaxy s yet due to incompatibility. They then said that my warranty has now been void too, so i need to pay £160 to get a new one  Angry Dont upgrade

ZLewisZX

Sorry to hear about your problem !!

I also installed this version when it first became available and had the same issues !!

The (UK) Orange tech guy advised me to take the phone to a Samsung Service Centre and get it reflashed back to 2.2.1 - which i did (he also confirmed that the update was 'a work in progress version' uploaded to the Kies server by mistake

If i was you i would make a complaint to Orange (via contact us on their website) - someone will call you back and tell them your sorry tale

Orange are well aware that the the update does not work and either Samsung or Orange have not removed the update from the Kies server

Orange are trying to wriggle out of any liability for this mess and i suggest that you make a complaint and get your warranty restored - the update was from Orange for the SGS and it is THEIR fault that your phone does no longer work correctly !

Basically Orange have failed to notify customers of a faulty update either via their website or by writing to their customers - make them aware of this fact !!

Don't stand for any more nonsense !!!

Cheers
