Im on UK TMOB SIM

GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: I9000XXJM1
Kernal: 2.6.29 umts_scm@S1-BUILD05 #2
Build: ECLAIR.I9000XXJM1

I get GPS lock no problem and I also can run flash but not flash 9.

Weird as I was expecting no flash at all.

My mobile is unlocked though.

As far as I know, you can only upgrade officially via Kies.

How is it most of you guys are okay with that ? I mean not only is it more troublesome for us customers to update through kies, but it also means that you will lose all your data. As a customer, I certainly wouldn't want to go through that....again. Think it's about time someone had a talk with samsung. They are no exception and MUST deliver an ota update like the other companies... For that is what a well paying customer expects when buying these premium products... Convenience and piece of mind... Just My two cents. :-)

Is there any channel through which we could request samsung to implement this ? Maybe they could provide the update through samsung apps, which is pre installed on the phone ?

AFAIK Froyo retains your settings and there is no need to reinstall all your apps.

I've been googling this samsung ota update issue a lot, and I read in another forum that apparently, we will be getting froyo by end of september OTA after all! I just hope that's true....

AFAIK Froyo retains your settings and there is no need to reinstall all your apps.
Not if you update through samsung kies. It would be the same as flashing your rom, which means your phone memory will be wiped clean, and not your sd card.

I upgraded my device to the official JPD Android 2.2 release about a week ago.  I have noticed absloutly none, zero, negligable, no speed improvements at all.  If anything it is a little slower for email, and RSS.  Talk about being mis-sold and disapointed.

So I checked with Quadrant and Linpack, having run them before the upgrade.  Not big differneces, especially with Quadrant that relies heavily on fielsystem IO to compute its score.

Android 2.1
Quadrant: 893
Linpack: 8.34

Android 2.2
Quadrant: 963 (not as fast as a stock Motorola Droid X)
Linpack: 13.68

I haven't installed the lagfix, in the hope that the native improvements in performace of froyo would make the device feel better.  Guess the file IO really is the bottleneck on the device.

Anybody else done a measured before and after performance test?
If you are about to upgrade can I suggest doing a before and after test with Quadrant and Linpack?
