This is just weird... it has been a few days that I've been seeing that there is a firmware upgrade available for my phone from 2.2 to 2.2.1. So i thought of backing up my apps and did a factory reset.
I hooked up my phone and continued with the Firmware Upgrade, I followed the instructions to upgrade the phone and while at the middle of the "downloading binary file...", it prompted me that no network connection was found. I do have active wireless connection and did get any interruption from the site I was browsing, besides I'm just 6 feet away from the router.

So I restarted the phone and pc and now, it says "This device's version cannot be updated." JPA/JPA/JPA
--> I was so sure the first two doesn't says JPA and I was prompted for an upgrade... I wonder why. Has anyone encountered the same?

Is it true that update to 2.2.1 will end access to system file (rooting block)?

Me too bro. Exactly identically similarly the same. Tried to remove OCLF and unroot and I get that problem as well. Using the Kies 2.0 as well.

Yes, so you might want to not update to 2.2.1 if you have rooted your phone. But, there is also a performance improvement, so it hopefully evens out. And, you can also say byebye to ad-free games with 2.2.1.

I want to love this phone I really do( can't fix the horid battery life) but 2.1 is not that good. From what I hear 2.2 or 2.2.1 is a vast improvement. How do I put this on my phone? Thanks. Kyle form Alaska USA

you should check this out. I'm guessing you have the Vibrant. the Bionix-V ROM improves battery life, snappyness, etc with one drawback. A data connection error which can be fixed by entering and leaving flight mode.
Bionix-v 1.2 is even better from what people say - with the same data connection glitch.
The glitch is that when you leave your WIFI zone, the 3G network is not going to be automatically activated until you enter and then leave flight mode.

Just upgraded to 2.2.1 through Kies and I gotta say, way snappier performance than 2.2 with OCLF, although I'm only getting 1250 quadrant it still feels 25-50% quicker than 2.2.

I haven't gone through the factory reset/ setting up process like usual cause frankly, it's too much of a hassle. haha.

I'll evaluate performance as is and chime in if there's any need to do a factory reset. But, so far, this is the best update since I first got the phone.

Still quicker than 2.2 with OCLF!

Plus, there seems to be a new feature in settings>phone info. There's a "Check for Updates" option there. I tried it and it asked for my login info, once logged in, it says connecting to samsung server and then it says "No updates."

I'm hoping that this is an over-the-air update system which bypasses kies! If it is, I'm definitely a happy camper.

Hi,

Since my last visit here in January, I see that others have also run into the "This device's version cannot be updated" issue that I encountered back in January.  My phone (which has never been rooted) is still running 2.2 but I'd like to go to 2.2.1 to get the speed improvements that other folks have seen.  However, I just tried again and got the same outcome as before.  I firstly upgraded to the latest Kies 2.0.0.11032_12 version (took a while - talk about bloatware...).  Then when I connected the phone and displayed the firmware information, it showed (slightly different wording this time):

This version of the device cannot be updated.

Current firmware version: PDA:JPA / PHONE:JPA / CSC:JPA (SIN)

Now when I encountered this previously with the 1.5.x Kies version, I asked: Does this mean "You already have the latest version available for your phone in this territory," OR does it mean "There is a problem that prevents your device from being updated"?  At the time (January), Casz kindly replied saying "You already have the latest version for your territory."  I'm now beginning to wonder whether that is still the case, or whether there is some other reason why the phone is not allowing itself to be upgraded.

Has anyone in Singapore been able to upgrade to 2.2.1 yet?  If not, it seems pretty poor on the part of the local Samsung and Singtel folks that they still haven't provided an update to this version, considering that it's been around for a while now.

Any info or suggestions would be very welcome.  I'm still getting a lot of slowness on this phone, especially with Touchdown.  I don't want to root the phone or install lag fixes unless I really have to; or to put it another way, why should I have to?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

i'm having the same problem "This device cannot be updated" ....

i guess i will just have to live with 2.2 .. but it's kind of annoying that updates aren't made for everyone just for some parts of the world and then they slowly add more parts...

i hope that someday it will be available in my country (Slovenia).

Lots of people say that it's a lot faster... if the update won't be able i guess i will have to try and root my phone witch i'm a bit sceptical about...

Yeah, it's so frustrating, isn't it?  The manufacturer and telcos both apparently seem happy enough to treat their customers with contempt.

I finally lost patience and took the plunge.  I just downloaded OCLF (One Click Lag Fix) 2.3.1 from the Market.  The installation instructions in the help menu were quite easy to follow - first of all I had to Google and download z4root 1.3.0, then install and run it to root the phone (I selected permanent root cos I just wanted to get on with it).  After rebooting I then ran OCLF itself, firstly to install EXT2, then finally to install the lag fix itself.  I set the EXT2 slider to 1024 but have no idea how optimum or otherwise that setting is.  Another reboot (this is starting to sound like Windows ;-) and the phone is now up and running with the lag fix.  Initial impressions (after only about 5 minutes mind you) are that there is a definite improvement in speed.  Touchdown is more responsive, which was my main bugbear before.  Time will tell how much a of difference it has really made, but so far so good.

So I ended up doing the thing I was against doing on principle (i.e. rooting).  My point is - why on earth should it be necessary to faff around to this ridiculous extent, just to make the damn phone work the way it should work right out of the box?  I love the Galaxy S hardware, but the software (Kies and Samsung's OS implementation) is just dire.  Imagine if you bought a new car, then found that in order to prevent it from stalling at every traffic light, you had to take the engine apart, modify the fuel injectors, change the timing and install a custom upgrade on the throttle assembly?  When you look at it that way, it is pretty pathetic.  But never mind, it looks like I got there (or at least nearer to having a responsive phone).   It's a sad reflection on the fact that Samsung let themselves down so badly on the software front, that when people ask me whether they should get an SGS or iPhone 4, I have a real dilemma.  My heart really wants to tell them to get the SGS, but then my head ends up telling them that unless they have the patience of Job to tinker endlessly with apps, settings, configurations, etc., they'd be better off with the other Mr Jobs' offering.

[Please excuse the rant :-)]

I got 929 on Quadrant before installing OCLF; after installing it I got 1827.  Note, these were single tests, so some variation might occur if repeated tests were done, due to background tasks.  But definitely an improvement.

From the very long OCLF thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691 (there are 162 pages), it seems clear that this app is not being developed any further.  So while it seems to work OK on 2.2 (at least it did for me), it does not seem to be suitable for later versions.  Edit: The most helpful IronSingh has confirmed that here: http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/samsung-galaxy-s-rooting/root-lag-fix-and-upgrade-to-2-2-1/msg16751/#msg16751

To get this back on topic, I'm still interested to find out if anyone in Singapore (with an unrooted phone) has been able to upgrade to 2.2.1 via Kies?

With 2.3 allegedly coming, maybe it's better to just wait for that, but with the long wait and missed dates for 2.2.1, I'm not holding my breath...
