Just a quick question, with a not so quick answer...?

I'm not running a windows system, nor a mac.
I run ubuntu linux.

Is there any way possible I can update my phone without the use of the kies software?

Install Windows OS through Virtual machine's software and install Kies inside windows.
That may solve your problem.

I am in the Same boat as you Triton. I tried to run Kies through VirtualBox.

I Pressed the Upgrade button and I got the message that this phone cannot be upgraded.

I have provided a Screenshot, I am worried that I get that message because of root.

I unrooted and Unlaged fixed before attempting this.

I am aware the Froyo update is not available(ish) I just wanna confirm that this is normal.

That's ok...

I tried Kies, and it failed horribly in a static windows environment.
I went to Samsungs site, downloaded their software, and it failed the first time, I hard-reset my phone, and it worked the second time.

That's how I got from 1.5 to 2.1

Now I just want to update to froyo 2.2 and I completely wiped my windows machine because I hate it. And now it seems like I've screwed myself over for upgrades... Crying

I'll figure something out, because I hate virtual box... or wine...

Well there is VMware but VirtualBox is much simpler to use IMO.

There some things that you still (unfortunately) just need windows for. Thats where virtualbox comes in. You keep windows in a Closed box where you know it can't do harm.

What do you mean by that? I thought the Galaxy S was 2.1 minimum.

Can you tell me what the problem was when you had to hard reset?

Cause when I was using Kies it seemed like if I plugged in the phone before opening Kies. It would tell me to connect the phone. But if Kies was running and I plugged in the phone it didn't complain as much. I found myself reconnecting to Kies multiple times to even get that.
Btw, when I say unplug I mean right clicking the usb control on Virtualbox and reconnecting.

well, I got the Galaxy S, GT i5700... and when it was released in Canada, it was 1.5.

The problem I had upgrading, was this:
1) kies didn't work.
2) samsungs program, stalled half way through the install, so I had to unplug my phone and hard-reset... which it started normally, no upgrade.
2) I re-tried the upgrade, and it worked. I was happy...

now I want Froyo 2.2 instead of Eclair (2.1)
HOWEVER, I've wiped winblows from my system, I have no wish to virtualize it. (slower, old pc)
and I just want the option of upgrading a linux system, from linux... call me strange, but to update a linux based system from windows just seems wrong.

I understand and Agree totally. It is a shame, when you see that Kies looks like A VM of some slimmed down Linux Distro. Maybe Bada OS?

Maybe they add OTA updates with froyo then we won't need Kies. Lets see on November 11, Just 5 days to go.

It is Sad that windows is still has the highest share in PCs. The world didn't wake up with Vista.

Why would you get a new Power hungry OS that needs more to do less. It just doesn't make sense to me. Thats why I keep it locked in a cage.

Good luck with froyo update If you do find a way to do it from Linux do share it.
Peace

Great Find man,

but this is only for Flashing Roms, You still need Kies to do an official Upgrade.

I made a guide for VirtualBox.

Have you tried it how was it?

What Distro are you on? are you using 64 bit or 32 bit.

I can't find a Log for changes and bugs.

theoretically if I build it on a 64 bit system it should work, but I don't feel like being the guinea pig.

Do you know if it works fine for X64?

I dunno...

I've also heard that if you root your phone, you can download the updaterom.zip file...
put that on another microSD card.

1. pull out your own sd
2. insert the sd with the update
3. restart your phone in download mode

voila.. it'll update
once update, replace the card with the update, with your own card...

I don't think that will work with 3e recovery for unsigned Roms.

I can confirm that Heimdall works fine. I have no W$ computer and was able to flash my SGS (a locked one by Orange) under Debian linux.

I've made a tutorial (in french : http://galaxys-team.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11822) to describe the whole. By the way, I wanted to do everything with command lines, so the tutorial is still usable even if you don't understand french Wink Wink

I don't know if heimdall works on X64, but if it compiles, that should be ok. I've never used Kies nor Odin, but Heimdall works really fast and reliably on a linux machine.

I think using Heimdall-Frontend it's simplier to work on Ubuntu.
