While many people have problems with kies,  it is the simplest method for upgrading (when it works).

Can you describe what happened when you tried to upgrade?

Well you can try re-installing Kies (ensuring you have the latest version), reboot your phone and try again.

Otherwise, if you feel confident, you can flash new firmware using Odin (or Heimdell but I have no experience of this). There are a number of custom roms available or you can use a stock samsung rom, which you can download from www.samfirmware.com Simply find the latest version for your model and region.

If you require more details on how to do this, let me know.

Please bare in mind, that flashing your phone is not entirely risk free (although few people encounter major problems) and may invalidate your warranty.....though the chances are if you flash a stock rom, Samsung would not know the difference if you ever had to send it away.

Morning, sorry about the delay, got involved in a Angel marathon last night  Smile

Warning: Please be aware of the following before you procede -

1. Flashing always carries a risk, however small of causing issues to your phone.

2. Flashing voids your warranty. If you flash using a stock firmware and you need to send the phone for repair, there is a very good chance they will not be able to tell, but it's not gauranteed.
If a problem occurs during flashing and you need to send it away, be prepared to pay.

3. Be certain you are using Firmware suitable for your model/region! Flashing the incorrect software is a reliable way to hardbrick your phone (shows no sign of life at all, no screen, no button lights, nothing, almost as if the battery is not even in).

4. If you choose to procede, this is entirely your responsibility

5. Back up ALL of your data, or risk losing it all

First you need to download the following:

Firmware
Pit File
Odin

You can get all of these from www.samfirmware.com. You will need to register but it's completely free. Choose the latest version available for your region and model. Once you choose the version, the table will advise the best version of Odin and Pit file.

1. Once you have downloaded the files, you will need to extract them from the zip files.
(samfirmware.com usually password protect their firmware zip files, the passwords are usually available above the list of available downloads)

2. Open Odin (if you have kies, ensure it is completely closed)

3. Turn your phone on in 'Download mode' (volume down & Home & Power) -Yellow triangle with the Android guy digging.

4. Plug your phone into your computer with usb cable, after a short time Odin will display your phone is connected (Under ID:COM it will fill a box yellow and display 0:[COMXX]

5. If your Firmare is a single file:

a. Click PDA & Select your firmware file
b. Click PIT & Select your PIT file
c. Do not tick 'Re-partition' (otherwise this could brick your phone) - Only 'Auto Reboot' & 'F.Reset Time' should be ticked
d. Click Start and wait for it to complete

If your Firmware is a 3 file firmware:

a. Click PDA & Select your PDA file
b. Click Phone & select your Phone(might be called modem) file
c. Click CSC & select your CSC file
d. Click PIT & Select your PIT file
e. 'Re-partition', 'Auto Reboot' & 'F.Reset Time' SHOULD be ticked
f. Click Start and wait for it to complete

Once complete the phone will restart, then display some text on the screen as it completes the installation, then will start up properly. You will need to reset everything opn your phone as though it were new.

Thanks mr. cooks,

But i have some questions.

1. The region i am right now is mid east. As i checked the site, it says 2.3.4 is the only available firmware which is in arabic something. i checked my phone and it says arabic. So now, im confused like i have to download it? or the the xxkpn update which they say is more stable one.

2. How should i know if i have either 1 file firmware or 3 file firmware?
3. After the successful installation, do i have to wipe/out or delete the cache?

Thanks,

1. I'm not too sure which version number kpn is,  but  if you can find it to download and it's suitable for your model,  no reason why you can't use it.

2. Your download should be a zip file which you will need to extract.  Once extracted you will be left with either one firmware file or 3 (pda/phone/csc).

3. It's not essential,  but won't hurt to do it.
