Is it me, or is it just that Galaxay S and Kies (and Samsung) is disaster altogether:
1. Phone's basic applications lacks a lot of functionality needed for business people
2. Kies (this includes the latest version 1.5.3.10093_31.1) i) it craches on install; ii) screws up many peoples PC's, including mine, if you can get it installed; iii) is very unstable (most often does not connect to the phone); iv) the functionality of the sync with outlook is very bad (you have very little control; the way it handles memos, sms, mails etc. is not flexible and user friendly, etc.
3. The firmware update that came out 30. Sept 10 cannot be installed on my phone. With Kies installed and the phone connected (took only 3 hrs.), the updater crashes two different places, but fails EVERY time.
5. The Web-site does not have event the most rudimentary and necessary information (such as what has been adressed in the release), there is no patch or update history, etc.
4. Support is totally useless: i) they have no solutions to any problems - the only answer is "hard re-set" and try again; ii) they do not know what fix'es comming or when they come. They don't know which problems are recognized by support and worked on, etc.

In short, I will never buy a Samsung product again (and not a Galaxy Tab -which I was acutally waiting for). It is ismply too BAD.

I'm sorry we won't be seeing you around any more. You certainly have valid reasons although I'm not sure your expectations were reasonable.

The Android operating system is touted as a free, standing OS that doesn't require a link to a computer. Many users are taking advantage of that but to truly take advantage, you have to be a power user. For most average users this is an awesome phone that does cool tricks. If you have a problem, take it back to the service center.

Kies is Samsung 's nod to people that need/want computer connections and certainly seems to have hung Kies out there with no support. But I can't complain because the Kies software was never included with my device so I never expected it to work well (although until I understood it was created for BADA I didn't realize why). I had PC Studio with my Omnia 2 and it worked perfectly but I couldn't see the point of the software at all. At least I know Kies is for firmware upgrades.

Is this a device for business people? I don't think so unless your business requires that you play movies, games, music and take pictures in addition to some email and document review. Most businesses I know routinely hand out dumb phones or Blackberrys for a reason. Easy to secure, focus on email and those devices are about all most users can handle.

Samsung has sold millions of the Galaxy S phones, a small percentage (less than 1%) of users have persistent problems. Samsung needs to address that because it affects the perception of their product. Just like microsoft shares devalued because of the windows mobile revamp even though the company was still profitable and holds the marketshare in most OS for everything from home computers to ATMs.

Hi UrsusMajor, like Casz very rightly said, your expectations from the phone are quite different from what it was meant for in the first place.  Maybe you did not do a proper match of your requirement with the phone you bought.

I can confidently say that the SGS is a fantastic phone.  As for Kies, while some people have had problems, I have version 1.5.3.10093_31.1 running on my Win 7 ultimate 64 bit laptop without no problems at all.  I admit, Kies is not great and Samsung could have done better to ensure that their flagship SGS is properly supported by Kies (or by something else if they wanted).  I have had my SGS for a couple of months now and I am loving it.  Many of my friends with iphones are impressed too!!  I am awaiting the official FroYo for the SGS to make a great product even better  Happy

My first choice was to get a Dell Streak, but it wasn't out in my country yet so I had to make to with the the i9000.
The hardware behind this phone is superb, but the software is what really is stopping this phone from truly shining. For a phone with this cablibre of hardware I really did not expect such slugglish performance from it. Just opening more than 3 apps makes the phone slow to the point where its barely responsive.
Installing the One Click Lag Fix was probably the best thing I ever did for my phone, it really gave the phone the real oomph.

In terms of the Galaxy S being a disaster, I would have to agree in certain aspects, you would think for a flagship phone with such power, Samsung would try to unleash its potential, but no they leave the phone barely optimised and releases it out to the public.

Hi all -thanks for responding. Well yeah I might have had too high expectations, but when a phone with that price is put on the market, you expect it to work at least.

To you who say that the Galaxy was not made for hooking up to a PC - It may well be, but business people cannot and will never do business from a phone alone. You need to work with the PC and phone in a symbiotic manner. That the wars for market share makes the titans do stupid things only hurts us. With my old phone (HTC), I could call anyone from my PC, receive and send SMS, update contacts and calendars without toucing my phone. Look at HTC new sync software and site which lets you even remotly controll and use your phone - that is the way to go - and that is for Android guys. I think they understand how expensive phones are used way better than Samsung.

And how do you update the firmware of a Galaxy S? - via Kies! So if Kies won't install, want recognise the phone, and finally craches if you overcame the first two hurdles, what then?

Before I wrote the first post, I had downloaded the last version of Kies which was a disaster. I called support I they maintain that there was nothing wrong with this new version - my PC was to blame! So why is there a new verison out again yesterday?

Sorry Samsung - it just isn't good enough!

You should have stayed with WinMo. It's a superior OS.

Android is just between that and the lower iOS.

Sorry, Galaxians (Androidian). It's just my opinion.  Sticking out tongue

I agree UrsasMajor. I excitedly picked up my phone yesterday and have spent nearly the ENTIRE day today trying to install Kies ("MainStage has stopped working" program won't load up at all), Bluetooth (phone thinks it's connected, but the connection doesn't work and the PC doesn't know there is a connection), and USB connection/driver issues.  The ONLY thing I was able to to do was sync music and view the SD from the PC. I have no contacts in my phone, nothing. I suppose since SGS users don't connect to their PCs that they manually enter their contacts (I have 621). Hell, Windows Mobile Device can't even connect to it. My Nokia E63 feels like an antique compared to the SGS, but it connected/sync'd my entire life in 20 minutes despite Nokia's horrible software.

This is what Samsung intended in their design?

Well I entered my contacts via gmail and could have imported my contacts as csv onto am SD card. I know quite a few people with that never connect to a PC. But kies is not great.

This is what Samsung intended in their design?

I don't think Samsung will do this in purpose.

When they launch this Android, they have their own Bada on hand, so maybe, just maybe, they've overlook this.

For what I see, Samsung had made the Kies mainly for Bada, but wanted it to be common use for their WinMo and Android too.

WinMos had been with us for many years, Samsung should have been very familiar with its drivers, but not Android since this OS is still quite new.

This is just my opinion.

I don't see any problems with   Kies it works correct and what people say that you actually don't need Kies is exactly True!

Use your google account for Emails and Agenda, Contacts  etc and just enter your device by using external memory and not Kies!

I'm not interested in getting into a pissing match here, but let me first explain how easy this was with Nokia. I walk up to my desk, my phone automatically connects to my PC via bluethooth (SGS won't connect to Kies via my bluetooth, except for one time data transfers; Nokia works perfectly), Nokia and PC chat and exchange data automatically throughout the day, and I have a phone that knows what my PC knows.  No extra accounts to manage, connect to, etc.  Pretty cool, huh?

FYI: I now have Kies on my XP home computer, but Vista is a no go. This is not difficult. Nokia figured it out for ALL of there phones. Not just the BB want to be/business versions.

And I'm going to echo Omnian. Android is a half baked o/s compared to winmo and i o/s. I would have been v happy if SGS was running winmo 6.5. Android is only on version 2. Should kies be better? Yes. Do most people connect to their computer? No. Want to upgrade ROM? Take it to service center.

So, please tell me how you upgrade your phone software, without breaking the insurance, ie rooting.
