Disclaimer:
Please understand that you carry out this procedure understanding that there are risks of bricking your phone, and I will not be held responsible for your actions. Please Read everything before attempting anything. Please note I will be describing the Wipe method for lesser problems, this mean TAKE A BACK UP.

What you need:
A Rom with 2e Recovery. (Froyo has 3e by default). If you Are Proceeding on Eclairs (2.1) Please Skip down to (For Eclairs Start From HERE)
ClockWorkMod Recovery
Working 3 Button Combo (VOLUME DOWN / VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER)
Odin.

This How-to will be for someone who has a stock Kernel running Stock froyo. If you are running any sort of lagfix please Disable it before proceeding.

So First thing you need to do is to patch 2e Recovery to your current ROM.

First Of all goto Settings -> About Phone - > Build Number.

It should say something like FROYO.XXJPY you want the last three letters.

In my case I was using JPU. Now follow this link.

And Scroll down (there are three posts) until you find a the version that has your Build in it.

In my case I went with "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JPU-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip"

You need to get the one relevant to your Build. Download and Unzip this file to desktop.

Now Get into Download Mode by switching off the phone.

Now press and HOLD Volume Down + Home Key + Power Button keys.
Wait until you see the screen light up and let go of the power button.

Keep the Volume and Home Key pressed until you see a Yellow Android digging his/her way to China.

Remember you have not plugged your phone in to the computer yet.

Start Odin,
Click PDA and Select the new file you unzipped to Desktop.
Connect your phone to the PC in Download Mode.
Press Start.

Don't touch the settings in Odin make sure repartition is NOT checked

and you are Done. You now have 2e Boot Loader.

(For Eclairs Start From HERE)
Now follow these link:
Download the one that says CLICK HERE to download v8.0 [Wipe].
ClockWork Recovery

Copy the two files to the INTERNAL storage. Don't unzip them.

Now switch the phone off and go into 2e BootLoader by:

pressing and HOLDING Volume UP + Home Key + Power Button keys.
Wait until you see the screen light up and let go of the power button.

Keep the Volume and Home Key pressed until you see a Menu.

From Here scroll down with the volume key and select update zip with the home key.
The screen should go blank and come back to the same screen. Repeat the steps,
Scroll down and select update.zip. (If you get the Red menu right away that's ok too)

This will take you to a RED Menu.

This Is an Additional Recommended Step to reduce Problems.

Once in the Red Menu Select wipe Data/factory reset

And scroll down to select Yes.

This will not delete your Internal or External SD files. Only ROM data will be wiped.

As previously Scroll down and select "Install zip from SDCARD" with the back button. (home key will not do anything).

Now Next menu select "Choose zip from SDCARD", look for the big file you downloaded Draky's something and select it.

Then scroll down and select Yes.

Now wait around a minute or so, it will print Blue writing on the top to say it's done.

Once done it will go back to the red Menu.

From here Select Go Back until you see the option to Reboot.

You are done.

The whole process takes less then 10 minutes.

Reading this may feel longer. But please read and understand everything before proceeding.

Ask your doubts away  Laugh If I helped please show so by pressing the applaud button.

For those that Miss using SWYPE

Peace.

Well explained above,

To increase the benchmark, it's best to activate lagfix. This can be done by going to the Internal Sd, there's a folder Voodoo, Delete the file disable-lagfix, then reboot.

After using this Rom, i have noticed that battery consumption is a bit higher than earlier. Reason being Wifi. it's all the time scanning for Wifi(goto settings wireless and network, wifi settings, and there you'll notice it's all the time trying to scan for networks.)

If i switch off Wifi battery consumption is perfect. another option is downloading an app called Super Power" from the market it automatically controls the wifi settings and data settings which saves a lot of battery. The wifi will be turned off if not in use and if the screen is off... (so no more scanning).

More opinions appreciated

Lagfix doesn't seem to make a difference tbh.

There is another way to achieve this,

Long Press the Power button and Select Recovery.

Phone will boot into the Red menu (ClockWork Recovery).

Select the Voodoo Option, and in the next menu select Enable Voodoo.

Make sure on the bottom it says on Next Boot enable Voodoo.

No Go back and Reboot.

You will hear a Girl Robot voice tell you to wait for 10 minutes and updates you on what it's doing. This means it's working.

the benefit of doing it like this is Voodoo lag fix becomes reversable

Peace.

@IronSingh....Your method is sooo cool.... have learnt something new. THANKS

Lagfix is essential also in the Darky Rom, I was experiencing some lag (very very little anyway). I also notice my Quandrant standard gets higher when on lagfix.

But all in all, i can say Galaxy S is one GREAT phone. Can't count the number of times i have flashed, partitioned and tried different Roms. And still the phone is strong.

Let's see what we can do to make our phones better, as we continue to Learn.

You are a Godsend my friend. This is exactly what I am talking about. Directions can make or break a procedure and yours is simply brilliant. Happy Thank you. I am at work at the moment but when I get home I will try this method. BTW, I am already rooted using the Zroot and OCLF. Do I need to uninstall these before installing darky's mod? OCLF, yes as it is the lagfix but do I need to unroot?

There is no need to unroot, even if you are going to do a Update with Kies.

You will loose root with Kies but it will still update.

Most cases you will have to root again. But Darky ROM has Root preset, so you won't have to worry about that.

Peace.

I just opened up ODin and connected the phone and pressed PDA with link to the unzipped file. How do I know if it is done. Is there a message that says 'done'? BTW, the 'Vol Down' function did not work. I had to press 'Vol Up' to get into the download/recovery mode.

I had some difficulties getting into download mode with the 3 button combo. I have succeeded. It could have been my uncoordinated between fingers when releasing the buttons to get into download mode.

I've completed the installation process. There were some minor differences in the instructions where Red was mentioned. I did not see red but green. I just continued regardless, as long as the menu showed the proper text as stated in the instructions. Now, I guess lagfix is necessary.  I just checked the speed of this with quadrant from the market and it gives me much slower results than when I just had root and OLCF installed. The present results is 1160. My previous results was 1870, if I remember correctly.  Strange.

Just did this and the results are up to 1501, still lower than the results I got with Z4root and OCLF lagfix.

So I am not rooted at all (yet).  Do I need to root the phone (first), then install 2.2..and then follow these instructions?

I'm just on stock 2.1 and don't know where to start.  But I'd like to have 2.3 Gingerbread.

Follow the steps in the first post. If you do not have a JPsomething ROM you can't flash directly to Darky's I know mine was JH and is now JL so I would have to look up some other stuff.

I should have clarified,

if you have eclairs you can skip right to Downloading and copying. No need to patch the 2e bootloader. (I will Edit the first post to make this clearer).

As for root it is not necessary.

Added a Recommendation to do a Wipe before installing to Reduce Problems.
Added Swype Tutorial.

Peace.

Thanks for updating the first thread.  This is crazy, so I can install 2.3 with needing to root the phone.  That's very nice of you to post this.
