Hi Everybody,

I haven't been around in a while - mostly just enjoying my phone - no major problems in a long time. I've been doing a lot of reading about flashing custom ROMS lately.

I have a few outstanding questions that I really can't seem to find answers to.

My phone is a Rogers Samsung Galaxy S Captivate with Gingerbread (2.3.3) and rooted.

1) How does one match custom kernels to ROMS (custom or stock)? Do you just have to rely on what the developer says will work or do you have to match the exact Android version? ie: 2.3.3 kernel with a 2.3.3 ROM

I ask this because I'd sort of like to start with baby steps and get CWM onto my phone but it seems that you can't install it via ROM Manager on a Gingerbread Captivate. The only alternative is a custom kernel that already has CWM built in. Is it therefore possible to find a stable stock-ish kernel that has this?

2) Does sim unlocking have any relevance to flashing custom roms? I guess what I'm asking is: Is there any reason I have to worry about this assuming I'm using my phone on the carrier from which it was purchased from?

3) Almost all custom ROMs/kernels for the Captivate are AT&T based - are there any ramifications to using those on my phone that I should consider (other then ending up with AT&T splash screens)

Thanks as always

As far as I know you can use any version kernel/modem.. As a rule of thumb "I always use same firmware build version kernel".. Currently i swap between darkyrom & mitra rom both on jw1 based, so any kernel i use i match it up jw1..

With reference to cwm recovery, majority of custom kernels have cwm recovery within..

SIM lock has no relevance to flashing custom roms unless specified.. I have flashed roms on sim locked phone (but again its better to unlock)

I don't own or ever used the cappy (sorry.. short for captivate).. Sorry can't advise of any problems (but there shouldn't be)
