I understand you are into hacking. So I feel obliged to give you more details to such an answer.
First may I suggest you try and use linux, while there try and understand the command sudo or su.

Linux has inherently got the best secure OS architecture. Where windows give you full access to mess your computer up completely.

When linux thinks you are doing something that will change some settings that effect the OS it will ask for the root password. (the sudo command).

Some common application of sudo.
Installing, Uninstalling, changing root files and settings, applying updates, etc.

Rooting your phone just means that you get the privilege of Admin of your phone. It means you can do more on your phone that is usually restricted to advanced users, but since there are certain apps that are beneficial to power users they will also root their phone.

If you are not that much into it then I would like to get the short answer then no. You don't loose apps or data for that matter.

Hope this helped.

Peace.

I have rooted the lag fixes on my Samsung Galaxy. As i understand, this has to be unrooted/remove lag fixes before upgrading to Froyo? If so, how do i do it? Thanks

Well it depends on the method you used to do the Lag-fix and root.

But I am sure that One-Click-Lag-fix (OCLF) by RyanZA on the Market will un-lagfix it for you.

And yes it is necessary to un-lagfix if you are planning to upgrade using Kies.

Not Necessary if you are going to flash with Hiemdal or Odin.

Peace.

Don't know about OCLF, but if one is using voodoo lagfix, i would personally advice 'em to disable the Lagfix before Flashing. (From personal experience).

It takes max 3 mins.

And if you wanna enjoy your phone, Lagfix is a MUST.

@IronSingh, I have never used Hiemdal, how is it?? Just Love ODIN

The J sorry for the late reply,

First of all Happy New Year.

Heimdall is a more secure code then Odin.

Heimdall is an open source project with an OS Independent base.

That means you can run it on any OS at all and the code is available for anyone to read.

Odin on the other hand is a Closed Source Leaked Piece of software from samsung itself.

Why is Heimdall better if it is better at all? Well it's a question of piece of mind, and if you don't run windows then it also means less headaches and more seamless flashing in your native OS.

Odin is fine, it's just that you don't know what is in the code at all.

Peace.

ok...here goes... I decided that I would root my phone to get some of the figures presented by another user in this thread.

However, I have discovered no change in my benchmark test.

I used a program called super1click v.1.6.3
I have superuser on the phone and the report came back saying my phone had been rooted.
i notice that I don't have lagfix installed. could this be the issue that there is no [performance boost?
what is the point of superuser?

PS. thought i was quite brave attempting this...but it appears at first sight to be in vain - please advise.

thanks for your help in advance.

Ok... here goes...
I used 'super1click' because 'one click root' never ran on my machine properly and I had to bypass the .exe and run the root 2.2.bat file.and I had verification error on the I9000 running froyo.
So that never worked.

I then used the super1click version and that claimed I had rooted my phone yet with no performce change. Superuser was on my phone. I downloaded OCLF and installed it. Running it helped a little but not much. IN fact running benchmark i discovered no change from before the so called root.

I doubted that I had properly rooted the phone and so downloaded z4root 1.3.apk
this too claimed I had rooted the phone and gave me the option to 'reroot' the phone. I tried this and it too claimed that I was succesful but no performance change.

I then fired up super1click again and 'unrooted' my phone - it removed superuser and again no performance change.

Since z4root was already on my phone I thought I would give that ago and that just failed and I had to force close.

So... Ho on earth do you guys manage to root froyo 2.2 - becuase I have just about tried all things known to man (at least thats what it feels like) and cant do it. Could someone please help me get the benchmark results others have achieved.

many thanks...

Lisa
xx

PS. i still have z4rooton my phone, lagfix and also the update.zip folder left behind from oneclick

My phone is the orange UK variant FROYO.BVJP8

Rooting Will not increase Performance.

That was supposed to be clarified this link.

Rooting will give you the means to increase performance.

I believe I have told you on another Thread that you need to get rid of the bloated Carrier ROM.

Orange's (Your Carrier) Rom is bloated with unnecessary crapware that is slowing your phone down.

I suggest a custom ROM or flashing to an Official Firmware.

Peace.

Ah, ic. my apologies. I didn't understand the reason for the links - but then again, like a said - I'm very blonde at times.

I didn't want to flash completely but i guess I will have to.

1) What varient of the samsung firmware would you suggest? Euro version?
2) After flashing the varient firmware would you suggest rooting the phone?
3) after rooting how (what means) do I get increased performance?

I dont like the sound of 'roms' at the moment.

Thank you so much for your help - you are a star!!!

Yes go with the latest Euro ROM (Firmware).

Go for this version I9000XWJS3|2.2.1|2011 January.
2) After flashing the varient firmware would you suggest rooting the phone?

That is completely upto you. If you don't need it I don't see a reason to get it.

If you want to use rooted apps then you can go for it, but then again it depends on you. Don't do it because I told you to do it. Do it because you need it for an app or becuase you like to tinker.

3) after rooting how (what means) do I get increased performance?

Well 2.2.1 Froyo is very stable and snappy compared to your current setup. I suggest you use it for a couple of days to gauge how the stock performance feels like.

If it's not satisfactory you may want to look into Voodoo (A bit more complicated to do, but the speed you get is par none.) or OCLF (Much Easier to do and much more stable).

to be honest I don't see the performance gain from lag fixes, I mean the device feels snappier but not by a lot more as I would expect to see by applying something Like Voodoo.

If your main concern is Speed please have a Look At Darky's ROM 9.0 Extreme.

It seems to be the fastest one available.

I dont like the sound of 'roms' at the moment.

Thank you so much for your help - you are a star!!!

Sorry I didn't realize that the Word ROM can be a put off, but that is the correct word and the only one that fits. Firmware is technically also viable but, it would is usually when referring to less complex devices. I guess the word will get updated in the Dictionary w/e doesn't matter just a word.

As Always,

Peace.
