Hi,
I am new user in this forum and really really new to Android phone. I read many threads and viewed Youtube videos for some tutorials but make me confused.
I just got Samsung Galaxy S from Virgin Mobile Australia (locked), did all the initial setup and install Kies software in my computer (my PC runs Windows XP). During initial setup, Kies gives me notification to update the Firmware. I did all the upgrade. This is my phone details:
Model number: GT-I9000
Firmware Version : 2.2
Baseband version : I9000DTJP3
Kernel version : 2.6.32.9
                     root@SE-S604#7
Build number : FROYO.DTJP5

I have lag problem when open apps or contacts. Read some thread that version 2.2.1 will fix all these issues and improve the performance.
I am interested to root and get rid of this lag issue. I know root is not standard way, that's why I just want to make sure I do the right thing, these are my questions:
1.  Is it safe to root the phone and can I revert back to the original version (unroot)?
2.  If you know any link/video how to root & fix the lag the specs above, could you please let me know?
3.  How to upgrade the system to 2.2.1?
Thank you very much,

Regards,
Irawan

1) It is not a 100% safe to root, and it is possible to revert.
Check My Sig about what is root.

2) Rooting & Lagfixing your current ROM is relatively Easy.
You need two apps:

Z4Root and OCLF. Both available on XDA (Official Source). They are both very intuitive, if you are not able to follow please let me know.

3) In my Sig Link on Flashing

Peace.

Btw I forgot to mention

Z4Root and OCLF will not work on 2.2.1

For 2.2.1 you will need SuperOneClick to Root and Voodoo for Lagfix.

Let me know if you have questions.

Peace.

Hi,
I have researched from this forum and youtube to find the step to root and lagfix. Before I do that, do I need to unlock the phone? (my current phone in locked).
After I root and lagfix, would I still be able get official download from Kies? (if they release the next version).
Could you please check the following steps to confirm my understanding before I start the process?

Steps to root:
1.   Turn on USB debugging mode
2.   Download Z4root from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 (must be a member )
3.   Extract the zip file in the PC
4.   Connect mobile into PC and cut and paste the extracted file into any folder (internal SD)
5.   Unplugged the mobile from PC
6.   Open the Z4root file (apk file)with myfiles application (standard from Samsung) and install the application
7.   Open the application, choose “permanent root”, phone will be restarted and phone will be rooted

Step to Lag fix:
1.    Go to the market and install OCLF application

You mentioned about flash, does it mean upgrade the limewire version to Gingerbread?
btw, I am currently use froyo 2.2 so I will use Z4root and OCLF.
Thank you
Rgds,
Irawan

I'd be interested to see how you go Irawan. I have a Virgin SGS although I don't think it is locked. I have applied the 3 button download fix successfully and am looking at upgrading to 2.2.1 to hopefully fix my problem with the phone not playing the ringtone.

What do you mean by applied the 3 button download?
Did you root and lagfixed your phone? Would you be able to advise whether the steps that i wrote are correct?
Please let me know the steps how you upgrade to 2.2.1?
Do you mean the phone doesn't play the ringtone after root and lag fix?

My SGS wouldn't go into download mode. I applied the fix that I found on the XDA-Developers forum and it worked. It is my understanding that I can't root without having the download mode available.

The ringing problem is on the standard 2.2 firmware that I got with the phone; the animation plays on the screen, it just doesn't play the ringtone. Funnily enough when I set the phone to silent, a call knocks it out of silent mode and damn thing rings! Samsung have been "real" helpful, the handset is only 1 month old and they won't replace it, and I'm 1,300 km from the nearest service centre Crying

Mmmm.... i have no idea whether my phone has download mode. How do I check it?
I am bit paranoid for this root and lagfix, I just want to make sure it's okay. I am very backward in this tech stuff.

I can understand that mate. To go into download mode turn the phone off, wait for a few minutes to ensure that it is off. Then hold down the volume down button, the home or middle key and then the power button - wait until the GT9000 screen is display and let them go. If the phone simply starts up as normal then you don't have download mode available which means, as I understand it, that you can't update your firmware - I am happy to be corrected here though.

Check your versions by typing in *#1234# into the phone dialler. Your CSC will most likely by I9000XSAJP4, if it is then you are unlocked and should be able to apply the fix to allow download mode.

My phone is unlocked Happy can you give me the link from xda how to get the download mode?
I am actually quite happy with 2.2, my biggest problem is the Fixlag, I just can't stand things too slow and I often get message have to force close application and the responds is too slow and I restart phone couple of times a day.
Upgrade to 2.2.1 or Gingerbread would be bonus for me.
Thanks mate.

ok, head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 and follow the first post, forget the other 145 pages.

When you run the adb download reboot you will most likely get an error message, that's ok - the driver has been loaded. Once you get the pretty yellow triangle you won't be able to turn the phone off - don't panic, just remove the battery.

It doesn't matter if you want to root if your phone is locked, but it does matter if you want to flash.

If you are locked don't flash. Unlock First.

The only problem you may face if you want use Kies is that you will need to undo the Lagfix.

If you don't you will have to flash, which you can't do because you are locked.

In my sig there is a guide to unlocking your phone.

Peace.

Guys,
Thank you so much for your help and the discussions.
I have root my phone with Z4root and did the lag fix with OCLF.
So far so good and my phone is much faster. I am very happy with that. I ran the Quadrant benchmark and now I got result 1992.
Now I think I should explore and understand about the upgrade (flash) to better version (currently 2.2)

I am also rooted, in the international sense of the word! Now to look for a 2.2.1 ROM - might have a look at the romkitchen.
