Wow, from start to finish!!

Took me about 4 days at work on my breaks, but finally finished!!
Some really great information here, thanks Iron.
I have been searching and searching FOREVER to find a quality information/guide and this is the last one (of course) that I came across....Thank you so much!

I am very interested in rooting, just for pooh's and giggles....
I have updated to the new Gingerbread 2.3.4 (my SGS is an old one, got it over a year ago when they came available here).
I live in Korea, and have read that Korean phones may be a bit different than others when it comes to rooting.  Have you read about this at all?

When (if) I root, is there no need to get an updated firmware again?
If I do get the update, does the phone become un-rooted and then I have to root again?

Is there any point in rooting if I already have Gingerbread 2.3.4?
I want to be able to use some of the custom roms maybe to get better use out of my phone and customize it the way I want.

How do I know what is the best way for rooting?
I see all of these JV*** numbers, but don't see them on my phone...

Firmware - 2.3.4
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7
Build Number - GINGERBREAD.VG14

Appreciate all of help and for communicating to use new users like this....Just amazing!

No, and maybe its not different.

u need updates. rooting gives u sort of "administrator" rights, it doesn't do any magic.

U'll have to update via odin, kies wont work. yes, it does unroot and u'll have to root again.
(u can update with custom roms, which are pre-rooted)

yes. 2.3.4 has updated few things, but still it doesn't give super-user rights without rooting.

Rooting is only option.

VG14 is sumthng I've read for first time.
Well, to root, use a popular firmware version like XXJVQ or XXJVR (by the way XXJVS is latest and i use it too).
then use CF-root to root ur phone.
CF root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108

lemme know if it helps u.

No. You can flash pre-rooted custom ROMs like Darky_10.2 RE, Simply Honey, etc. via Odin or Heimdall.

WOW, thanks Jay for the help....

Ive actually been looking into this for more than a month now, and I have come up with my answer.

I ended up Flashing the Tegrak Kernel onto my phone using Odin and then rooted and lag fixed from it.

It was sooo easy actually, took less than 2 minutes and it is better than new!

1865 of the Quadrant Standard test.....I love it so far!

Now to do some playing around.....any suggestions on where to start and what to do?
As I said, it is a Korean Galaxy S, that is why it is GINGERBREAD.VG26 (VG26 is Korean)

Thanks again, and I recommend going with the Tegrak Kernel for anyone wanting to do this.
Soooooo easy!

It's about filesystems-converting.
File systems are: /system, /cache, /data, /dbdata. They are in RFS as basic.
But you can convert these partitions from RFS to EXT4, therefore the quadrant score will be higher:
from 1500-1800>>>2400-2800. Converting from RFS to EXT2, you can get 3400-3900.
You will need a kernel, that will be able to convert  to EXT2.
That are Damian's kernels.
