I wanted to update my phone and was told that I should install gingerbread 2.3.4 because my phone (Samsung Galaxy S t959) is a 1st gen and they wont have an update for it. I was also told I have to root the phone first.

1. How do I go about doing this? I am very new to this and was wondering if anyone knew of any website that have step by step instructions on how to root and then install gingerbread.

2. Also, where do I find gingerbread 2.3.4 to download it?

Thank you so much in advance.  Smile

Yes, I have heard people tell me that before and I looked it up to confirm and the pics on the web look like my phone.

I've been having trouble because all of the tutorials that I HAVE seen seem to be outdated. Also tried going through some step-by-step instructions on the forum itself but I couldn't find anything for my build #.

My phone:
Model #: SGH-T959V
Firmware Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: T959VUVKD1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build #: FROYO.VUVKD1

The first step is rooting your phone. Have you read this?

Could it possibly mess up my phone if an error occurs?
I see a lot of people in the comments on that page saying an error occurred. I don't want to 'brick' my phone (or whatever it's called).

The most important thing by flashing is that you'll be able to use the 3 button combo.
If you can't use it, don't flash anything!
