Thanks much.  Sorry, but I'm quite overwhelmed with the info and missed the separate procedure for DXJV9.

I'm currently downloading zimage-root.tar into my SGS1, but it's taking some time, more than 5 mins now, and it hasn't rebooted (i.e. still with the Android digging - Do Not turn off target screen).  How long does it normally take?  So I haven't installed su yet.

The procedure is the same. You should download it to your PC, then:
1. Open Odin.
2. put the zImage-root.tar file into PDA field. NO Pit and NO repartition.
3. turn off your phone and wait 1 min.
4. go to download mode using Vol.down+Home+Power buttons:
press and hold the VOLUME DOWN, HOME and POWER buttons together, and you should see the picture of the Android on a yellow triangle with the message ""Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!" below it. Now plug the phone into the USB cable, and Odin should assign it a comms port which will be highlighted in yellow. It won't matter which port it is, as long as it assigns it one. If it doesn't, then you have a problem with your windows drivers and you cannot continue. You will need to remove the battery from your phone to get out of download mode.
4. Hit "Start". The process takes 10-15 sec.
5. your phone will reboot.
6. after reboot unplug the cable.
you are done.

Thanks.  Took the whole night.  I'm trying the same procedure again, as you described.  Removed and put back battery, then went into Download mode.  Then re-started Odin and loaded zimage-root.tar into PDA (No re-partition & No PIT, auto-reboot and reset timer).  It's again been 5 mins, but again still with the Android digging - Do Not turn off target screen Crying

Can idea?  How can I bring this back to normal reboot?

Did you see a com port assigned for your device and highlighted Yellow, in Odin?

Where did you get the zimage-root.tar?

Yes, it said 'com8' and showed in Yellow in Odin.  Tried in both Odin 1.3 and 1.7, it run for a long time, then the same failed result.  Now Odin is showing Red highlighted 'Fail!'.  Quite desperate now, as my phone doesn't boot anymore, but just displays the cell symbol and PC symbol with an '!' in the middle (I guess signifying 'failed').  I got zimage-root.tar from the link provided in 'How to root Gingerbread' thread by IronSingh, for SGS1 having JV[1-9], since I was in DXJV9.  This was the link http://www.multiupload.com/URCSJP60AU

Pls help, what do I do now to 'revive' or better yet, make it work.  Phone's now unusable.  Thanks.

UPDATE: I redownloaded zimage-root.tar from Hotfile and it came up with one slightly larger than the one I previously loaded (6.3Mb vs 6.1Mb).  It worked and Odin reported Pass! 0:7.  Screen then kept displaying the battery rotating icon/battery symbols.  After several minutes of just this, I removed the USB and it now keeps displaying 'the Red Fish' (w/ Fubumod  at the bottom)... what does this mean? ...and the phone doesn't boot normally.

What could I try now?

Now unplug and remove your battery.

Close Odin.

Leave it as it is, then download and execute/install This Kernel_DXJV9.exe on your PC. Remember where it installed.

Start Odin again and select the Kernel_DXJV9.tar (inside the installed folder from above) in PDA, Without Repartition and Without Pit.

Put back your battery and boot your device into Download mode.

Connect to PC and flash.

When complete, let it boot up fully before disconnecting from PC.

Give it a Factory Reset after that, if you like.

Thanks.  I was able to install 'CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar' thru Odin, and my phone is now rooted.  Question though, what's difference between the DXJV9 kernel you sent and CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS, w/c I currently have?

The file I gave you is the original DXJV9 kernel, which need to be flashed after flashing 'zimage-root.tar' for the Root. It is for those wanting a clean kernel, without ClockWorkMod. Wherelse 'CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar' is modified with CWM included.

If you'd wanted CWM, you don't need to flashed the 'zimage-root.tar' in the first place. Just directly flash with 'CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar' will do.
