I think since I did how to root, there is a deficiency on a good overall rooting guide.

So I decided to write a small simple new user friendly tutorial.

*********************************************
******** You need root to be able to Lagfix.*********
*********************************************

For those that don't know what root or Lagfix is Please click here. Link for how to Root at the end of that post.

Before you Proceed a Disclaimer I can not be held responsive if you brick your device.

As long as you follow the instructions down to the letter you will not have a problem.

To carry on over here you need to have read the first post on the link above.

OCLF (Depreciated)

As may know the OCLF is no longer supported and will not run on the Malaysian JPE, or the European 2.2.1 or JPY+

First you need to download the newest file from here. Version 2.3.0

  • Once downloaded copy the apk file over to your phone.
  • Using My files App or any File Manager Locate and Run the apk file
  • Go through the installation
  • Locate and Run the OCLF App
  • Now Install Ext2 Tools, the phone may restart, and take a while to get back in give it upto 10 minutes
  • Now Install Lagfix it may Restart again, give it upto 10 minutes to get back

Congrats you are lagfixed.

Voodoo Lagfix

This when compared to OCLF is much faster.

Download the suitable version from here.
Get the Odin Package.

If you are on Windows You will first need Kies, if you don't have it first get it.
Link to Kies: Click on
Software.

Get Heimdall from here.
Link at bottom.

Ok now that we have the prerequisites we can start.

  • First thing to do is Open Heimdall
  • Now Close Kies make sure it's not in the status bar in the bottom right click on the << button to expand the status bar to make sure Kies is not there.
  • Enter download Mode
  • Now Plug the Phone into the computer.
  • In Heimdall Select Browse for the PDA Tab (FactoryFS), Make sure Re-partition is not checked
  • Now Press Start and it give it a few seconds.
  • Now the phone should reboot itself, It will take upto 30 minutes for you to see your phone now so be patient, you will know it worked because there will be an Android lady telling you in muffled voices what it's doing and provide an ETA.

Done.

Happy Hacking

Peace.

Hey, first post.  I downloaded and ran Heimdall but had no "•In Heimdall Select Browse for the PDA Tab, Make sure Re-partition is not checked" kinda thing.  That was version 1.1.1 - the only one there that I could download (older version was dead link).
There was a section under PDA/Code (there were lots of sections) but one which said "kernel(zImage)". I presume this is the right one to load the voodoo file into?  There was no box to untick either so it being 10:30 at night I chickened out and though I better ask first.  If you could please explain the heimdall part a little bit more, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for you post - I am so sick of this lag!

P.S. does it matter that I am running stock firmware?

As Saszseb pointed out you can also use Odin. I can see how you would get confused, I will make i clearer in the original text.

It doesn't matter what you are running to patch voodoo just don't run more than one Lagfix at the same time.

If it's still not Under PDA Untick Factory/FS

Peace.

the.worrying thing is that i have no backup either, though this phone being new i  guess you can just do sme kind emergency factory reset and i wont care coz i have contacts on old phone.
...right?
i just am really not so keen on screwing up the most expensive thing i have bought

Well it would look screwed it wouldn't be screwed, it is easily fixable by reflashing the phone correctly.

Peace.

I just followed your "How to Root your Device. Spoonfeeding." thread and then this thread.

The phone reset itself but is still on the Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen, it has been there for almost an hour.

Any ideas?

Hey, I am all ready to go and do this but I want to confirm this first.  The lagfix with the download .tar option says in the title above it is for froyo.  I have stock 2.1 eclair so I go down to the "Eclair: Galaxy S International version (GT-I9000) 8GB and 16GB" but there is no download .tar file, only a "Voodoo lagfix-only 3.0 Odin PDA package" which is named (when downloaded) zImage.  Is this the right one for me or do I need to use odin instead?
Or should I update to 2.2 first - note kies says "this version of the device cannot be updated" so requires a flash Crying

Glad you started another thread for this, Repped.

I will follow progress there.

Well this depends on you, If you are on 2.1 I would recommend OCLF as it's alot easier to pull off and a lot faster too.

But if you wish to go with Voodoo on Eclairs then yes go with 3.0 Put is in FactoryFS

As for you if you should upgrade or not that is a personal choice. Some people don't like Froyo others love it.

I myself am a bit of a beta tester, so I am always at the latest fix. I will recommend it but it's not important if you are happy with what you have.

Peace.

Hi all,
I attempted to follow these instructions to put Voodoo onto my Froyo SGS. I'm using Heimdall on Ubuntu 10.10.
I've done everything as per the instructions but the 'Start' button in Heimdall never becomes clickable. If I run 'lsusb' in the terminal it shows that my phone is connected.

Anyone have any ideas? thanks

I had the same problem. I figured it was something with heimdall, so I just used odin instead. Everything seems to have worked out fine. I have stock 2.2.1 (ZSJPJ) rooted via superoneclick using winxp.

Mine worked out of the box.

I looked up what the cause could be, I don't see anything except maybe you don't have the qt libraries.
Try this in Terminal with sudo

Code:
apt-get install qt4-dev-tool
