Oh my,

You need to take it to your SGS center and tell them to flash it to the correct version.

You flashed the Canadian Bell Firmware that is no good for you. Especially since they were having problems with the Drive dieing out.

Can you get into Download mode? If so I suggest you Flash JPU with all the files available in it.

Peace.

If you are on Froyo or Gingerbread, there is no need to tick repartition and no need PIT.
In Odin you should flash all the 3 files.
Using Heimdall:
Double click on the 3 files, you'll get 8 or more file, but you need 8 pieces:
factoryfs.rfs, zImage, param.rfs, boot.bin, Sbl.bin, cache.rfs, dbdata.rfs, modem.bin.
These are to flash.

I've tried loading the JS5, JPY and JVS firmware packages from here using Heimdall, but each time it unpackages the .rar file it says "firmware.xml is missing from the package".

What I want to do is a completely fresh install on my Galaxy S.

What should I do?

Download a ROM using Heimdall??!!, NO!!
Heimdall is for flashing a ROM.
Download a ROM, run it (if it is .exe), extract it, then flash these files using Heimdall!

Historically, it has been difficult to get Flash content indexed and ranked by search engines. In the past, search engines, such as Yahoo and Google, did not spider Flash content as they could not read the compressed file and much of the text inside the SWF appeared as graphics to the search engines. Today, we can show you how to optimize your site for search engines.
