Hi, I have stock ROM gingerbread JV5 (upgraded via Kies) in SGS and trying to root it using gingerbreak mode in superoneclick but it just hangs ...
I have followed the instructions: remove SD card, debugging mode, in TW launcher mode but still unable to root JV5.
I am aware there is alternative way using CF root but I am used to superoneclick way, unable to find the right CF root for JV5, and found too many problems with CF root reported in the net.
Can someone pls help me? I am in really in need to root my SGS so I can restore some data using titanium backup.
Thanks,

Don't use SuperOneClick on Gingerbread!
Download the "Kernel_ZSJV5.exe" from hier and run it. You'll get a tar file.
1.Flash zImage-root tar file as PDA with no pit and no re-partition using Odin.
2.After Odin says "pass", your phone will reboot.
3.Unplug the cable from Pc.
4.Turn off your phone and wait 1 min.
5.Go to download mode via 3 button combo.
6.Put the extracted original Kernel tar file as PDA only, no pit and no re-partition, plug the cable to the PC again and flash this kernel.
7.After Odin says "pass", your phone will reboot.
8.Unplug the cable from PC.
You are done.

Questions:
- In step 1, do I need to get the SGS in download mode, or, I can just plug my SGS to my PC before running ODIN and flash it using zImage-root.tar?
- Do I need to remove SD card?
- Do I need to set the USB into debugging mode?
Thanks,

Hi, I tried both Odin 1.3 and Odin 1.7, and neither is working when I tried step 1. it says:

<ID:0/008> Added!!
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:Eyes Rolling..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

Did I do something wrong?
I am already in TW screen, USB in debug mode and killed Kies when I connect my SGS to PC. I think Odin can see this connection - it shows "0:[COM8] in ID:Com box highlighted in yellow.
Do I need to be in download mode before running step 1?
Thanks,- H

Had same problem - posted under Rooting threads and awaiting reply. Then I saw this thread, seemed to be my problem also.
I followed the instructions from saszseb reply #1-7, everything seemed to go OK.
"about phone" says it is rooted but I have no root widget and titanium fails due to lack of root or no busybox.

ODIN output was
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> SetupConnection..

Details from "about phone" are

Firmware version  2.3.3
Baseband version   I9000xxjvo
Kernel v 2.6.35.7-I9000zsjv5 root@avad-server #2
Build number gingerbread.xxjvo

titanium fail said no root or busybox missing. I removed and reinstalled titanium - thought this would install busybox if not there. Titanium still fails.

2.3.3 upgrade seems good - no issues so far.
any help please with root?

( I will now delete original post under updates thread)

PS been reading while waiting for a response. Based on another posting above, should I flash using ODIN and CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.zip

You have got "superuser" icon on the apps drawer, don't you?
Titanium Backup-busybox is missing:
1. open TB.
2. hit "Problems" and install "Busybox".

saszseb
thanks for the reply.

I do NOT have a superuser icon.

The titanium message is "sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work. Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again."

Also. I ran Root Checker 2.7 and it said I do NOT have root access. In advanced mode it said "root access is not properly configured or granted".
It failed to find it in /system/bin/su, /system/xbin/su, /sbin/su = no such file or directory. final message "SU binary not found in the system declared path".

SO looks like the rooting did not work for some reason?

Just to recap:
I used SuperOneClick to root stock froyo 2.2 as I wanted to use Titanium. That worked OK.
I updated from 2.2 to 2.3.3 using this link  =   http://trollfactory.fr/update-your-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-to-gingerbread-android-2-3-through-kies-2-467.
That worked without error and everything seems fine after 24 hours, except that root access was gone.
I've been following this thread and your inputs to try to root 2.3.3.

Thanks again.

Have you tried to flash the other one: CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS.tar?
What's the result?

saszseb
I've just flashed CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS and it seems to have done the trick. I have superuser icon and titanium works.
Many thanks for your posts.
