I have been putting this off for a while.

Saszeb has posted his mini guide everywhere and in effect I believed this would be sufficient.

It seems this is not true, so I will be making this guide now.

This guide will be effective for SGSII and SGS on Gingerbread or Froyo.

For those that don't know what root is Please click here.

Before you Proceed a Disclaimer I can not be held responsive if you brick your device.

As long as you follow the instructions down to the letter you will not have a problem.

This Guide may feel more complicated, I will try to make it as simple as possible, please bare with me.

First of all let me explain the concept, as of Froyo the Bootloader has been modified to require a signature to apply updates. This was the primary method to root until Froyo,
Applying a update with root within.

What this guide is essentially doing is Removing the verification check by flashing the older bootloader in place of the new one, letting you root the oldschool way.

So first things first. You need CF-Root. SGS SGSII. (Scroll Down)

This will be where most of the headache will be faced.

As you can see there are many files, and the task here is choosing the right one.

First goto Settings -> About Phone - > Build Number.

It should say GINGERBREAD.XEKE7 you want the last three letters.

In my case this is KE7 so I would go for "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEU_KE7-v4.0-CWM4.zip"

If You have the SGS1 and Have JV[1-9]
Please Use this instead

Just flash the file as PDA and you are done.
Credit Goes to Saszseb

If you are not able to find the one for your ROM or are understandably not sure about which version is correct please post HERE

You need to get the one relevant to your Build. Download and Unzip this file to desktop.

Now you need Odin. Make sure Kies is closed.

Remember you have not plugged your phone in to the computer yet.

Start Odin,
Click PDA and Select the CF-Root File
Connect your phone to the PC in Download Mode.

Press Start.

Don't touch the settings in Odin make sure repartition is NOT checked.

If you are on the SGSII you are done.

If you are on SGS, you need to download Superuser update.zip.

Link: http://bit.ly/su2361ef Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828

Once you have this file copy and paste it as is into your phone where you will be able to find it.

Enter Recovery Mode.

This is usually RED but I have seen Orange, Green, etc. Key is to see ClockWorkRecovery on Top.

Now just Select Install zip from SDcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> Select the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip.

Select Yes, wait a little and you are done.

Try to open Titanium Backup to test if you are rooted.

Troubleshooting:

If you loose booting Animations or Sounds on the SGSI then don't worry that's normal. CF-Root just consumes it to make room for itself.

Enjoy

Peace.

Hi Ironsingh, should i remove the sd card before rooting?

Optional Not Required, If it eases your mind go ahead.

Will i loose all the intalled apps after rooting?

No, This is only true for some devices on Initial Unlock of the Bootloader like the Nexus S and some HTC devices.

As for The Galaxy Line don't worry this is not an Issue, you are only changing a system file to accept giving you Admin Privilage (Root).

Do i need a lagfix after rooting?

That is upto you, I don't feel lagfix is nessacary in Gingerbread, but that's me. I keep it simple on my device limited apps and simple usage for most efficiancy.

Should i install Titanium backup after rooting?

Again Upto you, unless you want to test if root worked or you wish to backup.

This is what I did.
I own a SGS 1 GT I9000 running on DDJV9(INU).
I downloaded the files as said by Ironsingh and did everything as he said.
When I successfully downloaded the root file into my phone via Odin, my phone booted and charging screen came up. Then I unplugged my phone so as to get into recovery mode. As I unplugged, my phone lit up on its own n showed the default startup screen followed by FuguMod screen. This kept on looping. Next I removed battery and tried recovery mode key combo (vol up + home + power), but only startup screen and fugumod screen looped, no recovery mode screen.
I had to flash the stock rom all over again, lost all my data Crying , only upside is that I didnt brick my phone.
Plz Help!!!

"FuguMod screen"? The red ugly fish?

Did you follow closely to the instruction? Odin, No Pit and No Partition.

Which CF-Root did you used?

For recovery mode, can you try again? A few more times maybe.

Press Volume UP + Power + Home buttons, all at the same time. When the screen lights up, release all buttons together, at the same time.

So you're now on stock DDJV9 and running well? How did you flashed back to stock when you can't boot to Recovery?

You asked for help mean you still want to root?

Can you boot to Recovery mode now, with the stock Firmware?

Oh...so Download mode is working, only Recovery mode is not?

Okay, if you still want to Root.

Download This zImage-root.tar and flash it as PDA with Odin Without Repartition and Without Pit.

When completed, DO NOT unplug it yet. Let it boot to the red ugly fish then to battery charging. If it loops, nevermind, let it loop a few times.

Then unplug and remove your battery.

Close Odin.

Leave it as it is, then download and execute/install This Kernel_DDJV9.exe on your PC. Remember where it installed.

Now, start Odin again and select the Kernel_DDJV9.tar (inside the installed folder from above) in PDA, again Without Repartition and Without Pit.

Put back your battery and boot your device in Download mode.

Connect to PC and flash.

When complete, let it boot up fully before disconnecting from PC.

Advice to give it a Factory Reset after that.
