PC will not recognize my samsung to transfer files

My PC will no longer recognize my samsung galaxy s. Before, I could hook it up via the usb cord and transfer images/videos; however, now when I plug it up nothing happens except for the phone charging. There's nothing in the status bar drop down. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Have you used Kies?
If not:
Have you installed the Samsung USB driver for Mobile Phone.exe, (if you use Windows)?
I use SwiFTP (Wi-Fi connection) for transfer.

Has something happened to your cable?

Have to say that now I'm on googleplus this kind of stuff is no longer an issue. All photos and videos upload automatically when I'm on WiFi and I do documents and files via dropbox otherwise I would use saszseb's suggestion of SwiFTP

I solved so:
Fron User Manual page 112:
Connec as a mass storage device
Settings - Wireless and network - USB utilities - Connect storage to PC
Then connect the cable
The green icon of android appare on the phone screen
On the PC i see now 2 new removable Disks

With this way i am able to visualize the pictures on the PC.
