Searching for a good headset for my Samsung Galaxy S ii i9100 which is a volume button, a shift number button and pause button on the cord, which works with the phone.

I too would like a recommendation for a wired stereo headset with microphone and controls.

Little surprised they did not come with my unit.

I can't say that I'm impressed with the headset that shipped with the phone.

For one, it doesn't seat properly and you have to be careful to insert it into the jack. And I find that the volume control doesn't work.

I haven't had a chance to see if it does anything should a call come in while I'm listening to tunes.

Is this normal functionality, or did I get a dud set of earbuds?

As far as I'm aware the SGS2 does not support volume buttons. What I gather it does support is the Apple iPhone single control button, which earlier handsets didn't (different wiring of the 4 pin connector). These from DX look pretty smart and stangely familiar http://www.dealextreme.com/p/designer-s-in-ear-stereo-earphone-w-microphone-volume-control-3-5mm-jack-124cm-cable-102844

This one looks pretty great http://www.mytrendyphone.co.uk/shop/jabra-street2-bluetooth-57450p.html  .
I had something similar Jabra headset, and the sound is great!

Your earbuds do sound a bit odd lol. I was under the impression that push bottun volume control wasn't possible on this handset. My earbuds have just the one button - short press pauses music, long press for voice control (when it feels like it lol), double press to skip a track but no volume control.

As for the not seating properly issue, you are aware that the edge of the S2 that houses the socket is curved, so the plug is fully seated when it touches the side of the socket nearest the screen? The backside curves away slightly so some of the plug contact is visible but it has no effect on the connection. I've heard a lot of people weren't pushing the plug fully home too, but I don't think it required excessive force.

I am very disappointed this phone doesn't come with a headset with volume controls and other controls that can change tracks and FM stations. My previous 3 phones were all Nokia's so that's going back over about 6 or 7 years and all of them had a button to change the FM channel and to answer or end calls. My last Nokia before i bought the Samsung Galaxy 2II was a Nokia 5800 Music Express and the control on that headset is brilliant with a full set of controls allowing volume control, change channel or track, pause, play. Looks like i am going to have to keep my Nokia when i go on walks.

So from what i have read here some are saying this phone does not support headset control so buying an aftermarket headset won't work, is that right? Interestingly my Nokia 5800 Express headset fits and works on the Samsung but not the controls.

That's right, wired ones only have the single button to play/pause/skip and voice control in certain situations, no volume. Bluetooth might be a better way to go.

My last phone was a 5800XM too and as much as critics and other people slagged it off I thought it was better than the SII in many respects (but not overall). Nokia maps, instant unlocking with a physical button, great remote control and impeccable in car behaviour when teamed up with a handsfree kit are all sadly lacking from the SII.
