The only way to unlock it is the gmail account. The one you've registered when you've first started the device.

If you've forgotten the gmail account password, try going to the "Forgot Password" link. Try that from a PC.

You have to use the same gmail account when you registered during the initial activate of your device.

Samsung i9000 Galaxy SToo much attempts to introduce the correct pattern to unblock it.

The problem:

Dear: A few weeks ago I bought a Samsung i9000 S Galaxy, with the function "unlock pattern" working.
A few days ago a co-worker playing with my phone, tried several times to unlock it by entering the wrong pattern, which occasions that the phone will block indefinitely. As an option to unlock it you need to enter valid user name and password associated with your phone's Gmail, it is there that begins my big headache. I tried entering my username and password which was associated with the phone but told me that the data was incorrect, I clarify that I have configured, enabled and operating a 3G data connection but I could not make it work.I read countless posts where indicated a number of possible solutions, from testing with password "null", try without the "@ gmail", try "@ googlemail.com", etc, but without success. I also tried typing the hidden codes of hard-reset, but do not work because it only allows emergency calls. Obviously I tried turning off the phone, start in recovery mode with all possible combinations of buttons and even tried to flash the rom connecting the phone via usb cable and try to start it in "download mode" but the combinations of buttons do not respond, the phone starts without stopping. You say I have had not enabled the "USB debugging mode". As indicated in this post http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006 the problem that I cannot unlock the phone through my GMail account is due to a bug of the Android Operating System. I contacted the seller and told me he has a phone like mine with the same problem and have given no solution yet, I also got in touch with the support of Samsung, which I am still waiting for a response. Clearly this problem is due to an operating system failure, if you also added the keylock that comes from factory to enter in "recovery mode", "download mode", etc. It is a very complicated situation with the phone because I tried everything with no luck. The number of people affected with this problem is growing and still there is no solution from Samsung and Android. I thought the Galaxy was a phone i9000 S without problems, but clearly I was mistaken.
After much fighting with the local Service Samsung in Uruguay, in the Call Center in Argentina and Spain, all we received were automatic responses to emails sent to Samsung with this reply "You should contact the local Service Center, the only solution left was to find a solution on my own. I would emphasize that Samsung service is very bad

The solution:

1) I put my SIM card
2) I called from another phone and answered the call
2) Press the touch button that is on the left winged “home” button
3) There appears a menu with 3 options, "Contacts", "Notes" and "SIM services”
4) I selected "SIM services" and lower the drop-down menu at the top.
5) Press the home button (the square in the middle), I went to the main menu, Settings, Privacy and data factory reset.

I lost all installed applications and some data but I got my phone back, hope you find it useful.
Besides the problem of not being able to unlock the phone to my GMail account due to a bug in the operating system is also a security problem being able to access the menu while the phone is locked.Imagine this situation, if someone tried to steal the phone and try to access the critical information it contains, even though it has the pattern blocking enabled, using the solution providedyou could access the contents of the phone even when it is locked for security,  the thief could obtain critical information from the company that you work. Really unfortunate.

Thanks for the steps explaining what you did to unlock your phone. When you factory reset you should lose ALL data that was not part of the carrier installation. You would get some data back when you initiate with your google ID (contacts, emails). Are you saying that all the data was not removed?

Just so you know, the Pattern Unlock is just an eye candy and at the same time, a simple protection from prying eyes. It is not meant to be a full security system.

Most, if not every, equipments have their loop-holes where, with some know-how, one can work-around it. Even your PC with a password can be hacked open.

That's why most devices came with Phone pin, SIM pin and/or PUK. (although these also can be cracked or unlock by someone who knows how to)

Another protection service, which can be found in your device is the Mobile Tracker, where you can remotely control, locate and/or delete the content of your device in case it's lost.

Another free third party application is Lookout, which not only lets you control and locate your device online, but also protect your device from viruses and backup your data, automatically. You can find it in the Market.

applause - nice tip, nice app.

My concern was I use factory resets before recycling a device. If it doesn't blank all data I would have to do more.

Hi all,

As to what happened, my 8 year old sister in law was playing with the pattern lock trying to figure it out till it got locked.

I registered my SGS with my hotmail account and connected to a wireless before, but even then it wouldn't connect it went to "checking" and stayed that way for 2 days.

I attempted all the suggestions here and on many other sites unfortunately none of them worked. Although the Safe-Mode thingy you described by holding power-on/off button and volume down/up almost worked, but the moment I opened the security settings it went back to the locked screen mode.

I was stuck and had no Idea what to do.

The only solution I had was to go to Samsung Service centre and get them to reset the phone. I didn't bother going to the shop I bought it from, but the whole software reset is on the warranty. My headphones weren't working and they fixed that as well.

Although I lost all my applications and information I'm just glad I have my phone back.

One thing though, with the software reset, I lost something I enjoyed a lot about my SGS. It was something that made typing easier by just sliding my finger from letter to letter to auto-write it.

Well, that's my story,

cheers,
Tooh

Swype should still be on your device as it is included with android. I know it didn't look like it was on mine but when I went to settings | Locale and Text then tapped select input method Swype was there.

Guys,
My SGS got locked out after kid played with it. Now it shows too many patterns attempted and wants me to log in using gmail account.I tried all my passwords but still no go.I'm at wits end PLs HELP!!! Crying

I had the same problem, as my kid played with my mobile and too many patterns attempted.
What I did was
1. Galaxy s GL i9000 - too many pattern attempts

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006 or

Unlocking the 'google captcha' (https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha)
Waiting a few minutes before 3G connects to the internet

2. called myself from my homephone
3. left line open couple of minutes
4. hung up from home phone
5. press home button on my galaxy s
6. went into privacy settings and selected factory reset
7.voila.

You probably can save some pictures, music etc if you before doing any of those connect your mobile to kies via pc connector (via usb).

If you've forgotten the gmail account password, try going to the "Forgot Password" link. Try that from a PC.

there is a way but you need to go to the gmail web site first, then were you enter your email there should be under sign in CANT ACCESS YOUR ACCOUNT, click it then continue to enter your alteranet email from the information provided from your account information, then go into that email account an dit will give a link for the old email you used. If you forgot both email an password after the first step (the paragraph just typed) then type your email in the correct one of course, then click same link and follow intructions and it will be unlocked Happy
