There are many versions of Galaxy S!

It would be helpful if people would add some information about their device when asking questions. If you look in your settings and select About Phone it will tell your Model number and Build number. This along with your carrier and if you're rooted and/or unlocked could help a lot. Remember this is a global forum

If you want to add the info to your sig click the profile then pick forum profile information from the side bar. You can make it fancy with HTML if you want.

And we have sister forums for the US versions (looks like Rogers and Telus in Canada will also be US versions).

On another thread I read there is something about how the pins are polarized. Try a search on headphone connection.
