My wife has a new S. Her email and browsing works perfectly on the phone yet we cannot access the android market as the phone can't access the Google servers. It keeps asking for a username and password (my HTC never asks me for that). We keep getting the message 'can't establish a reliable data connection to the server' and to contact customer care.

I have tried to look at the settings on gmail with no luck. This is maddening. Any ideas?

Can you try clearing the data for market? It will ask you to log in again and perhaps that will get it to work

settings->applications->manage applications->All tab then scroll down to market. Touch the Clear Data button

I bought mine with Eclair 2.1 and though it had the market icon, I could not download any app because I kept getting the message that "no registered Android phone for this account". After upgrading to Foyo 2.2 via KIES Market become normal and I have since been able to download both free and bought content.

Disclaimer: My 2 cent opinion; From extensive reading, including other forums, most of those with this issue, seem to be centered around Middle East and China, but I am in a different region so their issue could be related to their region Samsung software release or the distributing Carriers[referred to as Mobile networks at home] and my solution may not work there

Thanks for the answers. Tried to clear data (cleared cache as there wasn't a clear data option) and it made no difference. The phone is UK sourced from a reputable source so isn't from the Middle East. Not sure I know how to upgrade to Foyo 2.2 via the Kies market. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks again.

One of the very annoying things with Samsung is their selective release of Software to different countries/regions of the world so I am not sure what software is currently applicable in UK, but either way for UK users first download the latest KIES from here
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP00&prd_ia_cd=&prd_mdl_cd=GT-I9000HKDXEU&prd_mdl_name=GT-I9000&srchword=Galaxy%20S

I upgraded from 2.1 to 2. via Kies and therefore if follow the steps below I think you might just succeed
1.Make sure the PC/Laptop you will install the KIES to has a minimum 2GB memory, runs Win XP SP2, Vista, or Win 7 preferably 32 bit. Also ensure that your internet connection is stable and preferably cable based
   2. Remove your sim card and/ External memory card if any is present
   3. Connect your Phone to your comp and if all all parameters are right KIES will detect    your phone needs an upgrade which you will accept to install. Once the upgrade begins this is an automated process with none of your input required
4  Depending on the speed of your internet connection it will take anywhere between 30 minutes on the lower side and 2 hrs for very slow speeds to download the software. Once complete the phone will automatically switch off and then on

And pronto your phone will be now have the latest firmware in your region

I hope that helps
