[SOLVED] Screen goes black while making calls, can't end call

Hi guys, just joined the forum  

So my problem is as follows:
2 days ago my Samsung Galaxy S just powered off & didn't want to start up again. So after freaking out, having a cup of coffee & loads of good old Google-ing I managed to factory restore my little baby using power, vol + & menu.
It worked & I was smiling again. Everything works great, except for making calls. After dialling the number & the ringing, my screen goes black and won't show again. Only option to end the call was to remove the baterry. Since this little bug I've changed my setting to using the power button to end calls.
Incoming calls are fine for now.
I've done another factory reset again
Any suggestions?

UPDATE 6/9/11 --> After all this time I've found a solution to my problem . . . I removed the screen protector!! Now my phone works normally again. Hopefully this would help someone else

I have the same problem, the screen only locks up or goes blank when making a call. Touching the screen does nothing. I found shaking the device brings up the display for a moment but goes blank again.

call samsung and they now want me to do a hard reset by pressing *2767*3855#. But doing this you loose all your data on the phone, contacts, apps etc. But after the reset the problem still occurred. It did nothing bar loose all my data.

Hi guys. i have the same problem. but i do not have a screen protector. and i did a factory reset a million times. I have had this since i got back my sgs2 after reparing it by samsung self due to a broken display. display is fine again. but since then same problem as stated in the first post. exactly the same. i tried cleaning the display. please help.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Blaze and my girl has the Samsung Exhibit II.  Both phones are brand new and have the same issue with calls fading and then blanking the screen.  When placing calls as a handset next to your ear, the proximity sensor turns off the screen, and then restarts the screen when the phone comes away from the ear.  This is exactly what should be happening.  However, when placing or answering a call using a headset or speaker mode where the phone is lying flat, the same fading and then blanking of the screen happens.  However in this case, the only way to bring the screen back is to hit the power button or to wait for the other party to hang up.  This is really annoying.  

In my opinion, this is a definite glitch in the OS (Gingerbread) since there's no good reason for the phone to blank the screen if you're not putting it up to your ear.  Moreover, it appears to be a glitch that affects many phones.

I've played with many settings, and I've looked for and tested all kinds of apps that are supposed to allow the phone to "stay alive", but nothing works.  That said, I have found a work around for the issue.  If, after dialing your call, you keep your finger on the screen, the screen won't blank.  In addition, if you hit your home button, and move away from the dialing screen, the screen won't blank.  This is a good work around because you can then use the phone for other things during the call.  When you want to hang up, simply hit the Phone button or drag down from the top bar, and you can easily end the call.

I agree with sbdrumr.  I found the solution by hit and miss, but it works consistently.  Easy test.  Make call and press speaker button.  Place phone on desk.  In a few seconds screen will go black.  Tap Volume Key.  Screen returns and volume not affected.  Tapping Power Key instead of Volume Key disconnects call.  Have been unable to find official instruction concerning black screen and Volume Key.
