I have several questions about my Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S and would really appreciate some help with this please...

Here are my phone details...

-Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S (SGH-T959)
-Rooted to Android 2.2 (Firmware version 2.2, Baseband version T959UVJL5, Kernel version 2.6.32.9, Build number: Nero v4.1 By Team Whiskey)

My questions...

1) My phone won't find my location when using the Navigation, Maps and Latitude apps. My browser always says "Location unavailable" on the Google home page and nothing happens when I click the "update" location link next to it.

2) If I click on the "Voice Search" app and say: "Call Bill Jones" it will search Google for the name using the browser. Can I set up "Voice Search" so it will search and call "Bill Jones" in my contact list instead of going online?

3) If I'm talking on my phone and someone calls, I won't know anyone called unless they leave a voice message (missed call does work if I'm NOT talking on the phone). I tried two different "missed call" apps but they didn't work. Can you recommend a "missed call" app that actually works with this phone?

4) I read that its bad to turn off running apps with the task manager. Why? What is the best way to turn off an app?

5) Can I install Android 2.3 on my phone, and if so, is it worth doing that?

6) Can I flip a switch and delete all my old emails from the gmail on my phone only without deleting them from my gmail account...but when I'm done doing that, can I flip a switch again so I can return to being able to delete from my phone AND my gmail account simultaneously?

Thanks very much.

Steve

Hello,

1. Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks>"Use packet data" checked.
If your "Maps" won't work, you should fix GPS using "SGS Tools". Of cours GPS turn on.
2. I use "Vlingo" from Market. It works for me fine.
3. isn't there a "missed calls" on notification bar? Scroll down it and you can see "missed   calls".
4. In my opinion: not bad. "Advanced Task Killer" from Market.
5. yes, you can. It's up to you. As far as I know it's beta. It's worth trying out.
6. I think there is a solution. When you make a new gmail account, you should choose POP3 server instead of IMAP server. Go to your gmail server>Settings>go "POP/IMAP": allow of POP protokol.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions.

Regarding each previous question I had and your replies...

1) I already had "Use Packet Data" checked. Should I get the "Captivate SGS Tools" app or the "SGS Toolbox" app? And what part of that app will find my location from now on so I can start using the GPS for navigating?

2) Is it the "Vlingo Virtual Assistant" app you are using? Will it search your contact list by voice instead of searching the internet like the phones "Voice Search" app that came with my device?

3) Yes there is a "Missed Calls" notification in the devices notification bar at the top and it does work IF I'm not talking on my phone. But the Missed Calls notification does NOT work if someone tries to call me while I'm talking on the phone.

4) And what are the advantages for using the "Advanced Task Killer" app over going to Settings > Applications > Running Services > and then Tap To Stop?

5) You said: "When you make a new gmail account, you should choose POP3 server instead of IMAP server. Go to your gmail server>Settings>go "POP/IMAP": allow of POP protokol." If I do what you suggest, does that mean that whatever I do on my device won't be duplicated in my gmail account? Meaning that there would be no record of sent emails in my gmail account and whatever I delete from my device gmail will still be in my gmail account when I access it from my computer, hence will require me to delete those emails again?

6) I forgot to ask this before but meant to.... Just what is the best way to fix the lag with a Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S (SGH-T959) that is rooted to Android 2.2?

Thanks again.  Angel

1. Open "Maps" and your Google map begins searching your position and then shows it. But first turn on GPS (it is on notification bar). Using SGS Toolbox you can run a "GPS test menu" if your "Maps" app. doesn't show your position on the map.

2. yes, it is. You must pronounce the name accurately.
3. I tried it and "missed call" is on  notification bar in both cases and on "calling" icon appears "1". When you tap on and then tap "Logs" the missed call on the top. I use "Launcher Pro" and in the "Dock Settings" you can tick "Missed call count", etc.
4. In "Setting" you can set "Auto Kill Frequency" (e.g. every half hour or when screen off).
In this case your apps will be wiped automatically every half hour. There is a tutorial in menu.
5. Yes.
6. Pls. read this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971094

Hey thanks for your help! It seems that I finally got the GPS location thing to work today. I'm not sure why its working now since I downloaded the SGS Tools app several weeks ago and followed your instructions and it still wouldn't work then. Hopefully it will keep working.

1) Can I set up Launcher Pro so call waiting will work?

2) Does a good app exist that will allow me to do the IMAP thing with my two gmail accounts (delete emails from my phone and from my gmail account)...but  also allows me to click a button and delete all the emails I select from my phone ONLY when I want it too - without deleting those emails from my gmail account? Not sure if I'm right about this, but I'm thinking my gmail would load on my phone faster if I could do that.

Thanks again.

1. I don't think it can.
go>settings>call settings>voice call: call waiting ticked.
What you can set in LP is:go> preferences>dock settings: Missed call count ticked.
2. The difference between IMAP and POP3:
IMAP: when you delete something from your gmail account on phone or PC, this will be deleted on your gmail server, too.
POP3: when you delete something from your gmail account on phone or PC, this won't be deleted on your gmail server.
But, you can set this on gmail server: go settings>Forwarding and POP/IMAP> enable POP and select "keep Google Mail's copy in the Inbox".
