I have been reading dozens of posts from various sites and I am extremely confused.

I have only ever used Nokia phones, but I purchased a Galaxy S 16gb phone several months ago now, and was amazed at how great the phone was. However with time the phone has been getting slower and slower to the point where it freezes regularly. It has caused me a huge amount of stress and frustration, at times freezing when I receive calls, but usually mostly when I am using various applications. Often the only way to use it again is to actually take out the battery and restart. I have the latest firmware and I try closing different applications, but sometimes it happens even when no applications are open. I am no expert with the technical features of the phone and its systems, but having read so many posts, people talk about "rooting", formatting, and a variety of other solutions. I guess the obvious thing to do is to do a factory restore of the phone, but I have a few questions I need to ask before I do this:

1. The phone has an internal SD memory of 16 gbs (I do not have an external memory card). If I restore the phone, does it affect this memory? What is stored in this memory?

2. Are the apps I downloaded stored in this internal SD memory, and will a factory restore delete all these apps? If so, how do I get them back again? Are they stored in Android Market? What about the app data?

3. Is there a way to back up apps and app data? Should I in fact use an external SD card for back up, or is the internal memory sufficient since its 16gb?

4. Are there any suggestions why the phone might be freezing up, or is the factory restore my only option?

1. Yes. Your backed up data will be saved on this internal SD card.
When you makes a reset, your data will be wiped.
2. A "light" factory reset wipes /data, /cache, /dalvik cache. The apps. installed are stored in /system/app.
Your internal SD card won't be wiped.
Using "hard" factory reset : dial *2767*3855#, your internal SD card also will be wiped.
3. app installed from Market are saved /system/app. Factory reset will delete them.
To backup/restore apps. use "Titanium Backup (Pro) from Market!
4. There is no need to use an external SD card. It's up to you, your data.
5. Factory reset after backup is the first option, the second one is a lagfix.

Thanks for the information saszseb. Just a few more things I need to ask....

I bought an external SD card today, so I want to back up everything onto this card before I format the phone. I looked everywhere, but I cannot find how to do this on this phone. (With Nokia it was so easy!!). What will and will not be backed up- in other words, what will I lose when I do the format?

You mentioned a "light" reset- I want to try this first if this is an option. How do I perform the the light reset on this phone (could this fix the lagging and freezing problem, or am I wasting my time with this option)?

1. menu>settings>applications>development>tick "USB debugging".
2. connect your phone to the PC via USB cable.
3. Copy data using Total Commander from internal to external SD card or to the PC.
Reset:
- menu>settings>privacy>factory data reset: untick "format USB storage">hit "reset phone"...
or
In CWM: select "wipe data/factory reset".
(CWM: ClockWorkMod Recovery)>>kernel related.

OK I just did the factory reset, so I will test and see how the phone functions. I did notice today by coincidence that there was a new firmware upgrade to my phone from Kies. I tried for hours to get this uploaded and installed and it would download the upgrade but then tell me my phone was not recognised or diconnected. So I would have to take the battery out and start the whole process again. I did this about 4 times and gave up. Is there a reason why t will not let me finish the upgrade. The upgrade is to 11.07.06.01 if that means anything. Thanks again.

I do an update/upgrade during 5 mins.
I don't use Kies of course.

Is there another way to do the upgrade without using Kies?

I have tried so many times and wasted so much time trying to make the firmware upgrade with Kies and it will not complete. If there is another way to do it, could someone please tell me how. Even though I love the features and applications of this phone, I have had nothing but problems with it. I regret ever buying it!

OK I finally was able to update my phones firmware and all seems ok now. Just one final thing to do. I backed up all the data including applications as you suggested using Total Commander, onto my laptop. I now need to restore this data back onto my phone. I have tried but I cannot seem to fid how to do this. Can you please outline how to do this to get the applications working again as before the format and upgrade.

I tried to do the reverse steps to what you mention above. I tick USB DEBUGGING and attach the phone to the laptop. But for some reason I cannot find the phone's internal or SD memory showing on my system. The phone is detected in normal USB mode but not when I tick the debugging mode. Is there something more I should be doing here? Much appreciated again!

As I wrote in my "reply #1", backup your data using Titanium Backup (Pro)., then copy the internal SD card to your PC.
Did you wipe your internal SD card, too?
If not, there is a folder called "Titanium Backup" on /sdcard.
Check it via "Root Explorer" or "My Files".

I think I have stuffed up then, because I did not use Titanium to make a backup. I used the Total Commander, as I thought this would back up the app data. So does this mean I have lost all my app data???? There are folders in the Total Commander backup with the app names- can these not be used to reinstall the applications?

I don't understand what the point of backing up the data was if I cannot use any of this stuff again. I can see the backup is there but how do I get the backed up data back into my phone? I reinstalled a few applications from Android Market, and they work fine, but for example, games such as Angry Birds has now restarted from level 1- so I lost all the levels I have worked on.

To backup your data you should use Titanium Backup. TB saves your data in /sdcard/Titanium Backup.
You should copy your /sdcard to the PC, just for case. Why? When you do a full factory reset, your /data, /cache, /sdcard will be wiped. Before flashing a ROM, I backup my data via TB, then copy the folder "Titanium Backup" to the PC. After first boot on a new ROM I grab TB. from Market and do a restore.
But sometimes I grab all my apps. from Market. To install 20-25 apps. from Market takes me 10-15 mins. No problem.
