I have done some searching and found people with a similar problem, except the one detail.
My phone will randomly shut off by itself; or at least the screen goes completely blank and none of the buttons do anything. This includes the power button (this scared me at first). I have to remove the battery and put it back in before I can turn the phone back on.

Is there a solution to this problem?

I called Samsung and they wanted to take my phone away for a month (F that)

That is not normal. I recommend you give it in.

But do tell me what you Rom build is.

Peace.

I had that problem when I had poor data reception (where I work there are ton of cable trays and very poor radio reception) I installed APNdroid to prevent syncing when I wasn't using the phone.

I would update to 2.2 JL2 - since I updated I've had no problems. It may resolve your issues as well.

I was thinking about upgrading to 2.2, but I also might want to root my phone and I read that once you upgrade to 2.2 you can't downgrade, and hence, can't root.
I don't know how true this really is

ROM build: stock. I haven't played with that at all yet

PS. If I root my phone will it void the warranty? It might not be a good idea if I need to send it back due to the problem mentioned above...

You can still root in 2.2.1

Please have a light read. To understand what root is exactly.

You can always unroot your phone. And if it is in a state where device won't boot, you don't have to worry as they won't bother checking whats inside the phone.

Peace.

As soon as I got my phone back I upgraded from JH2 to JL2 then rooted and lagfixed (whatever) and unlocked. With the apps there are locke, un lagfix and unroot options but as IronSingh said - your phone is bricked, they can't tell and that's the only way a warranty is honoured after a few months.

Alright thanks for the info. I'm holding off on rooting for now...
I updated to 2.2 last night. No crashes yet, but it's only been a day and the problem wasn't very frequent.
I'll post another reply if I encounter the problem again.

I posted this before... It could be an OS issue related to the "sleep" command but, my theory is this... this is a copy of the posting i submitted in another forum.

I live in the United States and have the same issue with my Galaxy S.  I called AT&T and they indicated they have no known issues on record. This seems hard to believe now that I see many people complaining about this.  As far as any corrrelation between the phone being put away in a pocket or purse; there is no such correlation.  Chances increases because the phone may spent more time put away than not.  I used to believe that until I started placing the phone on my desk religiously every morning.  Some days, like yesterday, the phone will not shut off at all. Other times, it will shut off 3 or 4 times in a single 8 hour period.  It is very random, so it is very hard to nearly impossible to duplicate.  As far as the amount of apps running int he background, I do not believe that to be an issue because I have installed App Killer and had enabled the auto kill option set to every 30 minutes to kill background apps, and it was still happening.  I even thought it could be the auto kill setting on App Killer doing it, but I confirmed this is not the case.

My theory that it is a hardware problem.  It almost seem to me that, as far as I am actively using the phone (like I was yesterday) I can go through an entire day without this being an issue; unless I completely drain the battery like I did yesterday.  Also, I notice that if the phone is charging or connected to the charger, this does not happen.

I used to work at Nokia back in the late 90's to early 2000's and my theory is that this could be associated to what we used to call iBatt problem (battery current).  If memory serves me well, Nokia phones experiencing iBatt issues turn themselves on when sensing that the battery is drawing too much current.  This 9 times out of 10 is caused by solder shorting circuits off... The overwhelming majority of the problems that were not caught in the factory were because of marginal phones. In other words, phones that barely passed the battery current test in the factory or failed but somehow passed a retest.  These phones often were logged as "Cannot Duplicate" or CND.  The reason I know this is back in those days, Nokia had (maybe still true today) no 3rd party logistics doing phone repairs on fielded phones.  So, we used to get all these field returns and we would look up the history of the phone.

If I am right, other than sending the phone for warranty exchange/repairs, everything you do will be pointless.  The limited success claimed by people can only be attributed to the random nature of the problem, how close to the current limit your phone is, etc... Remember, your phone current consumption is not just affected by your usage, but also to how close to a cell tower you are and how good your reception is to a cell tower.  The stronger the signal, the less power your phone consumes because the phone is instructed by the cell tower to reduce RF power level in order to save battery life.

Well, that is my theory which I am basing on prior experience working on this industry as engineering support and my own observations of my phone's behavior.

Hmm. It may be possible. But I find sometimes a simple reset is the answer to your problems

I am having issues with my Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G turning off on it's own---only way to turn it back on is to take out the battery.  I just bougth the phone 2 days ago.

It happens, from what I've noticed, in areas with little to no reception.  A friend of mine says thats just the way the phone is.

I noticed a few people posted something about upgrading to 2.2 JL2 or froyo to solve this problem--should this help?!  If so, how the heck do I do it?  I have downloaded kies for my computer, if that helps.  I do not understand phone jargon at all.

Yeah that is what solved the problem for me.

Try this link:

http://pages.samsung.com/ca/froyo/English/?pid=ca_home_subbanner_froyo_121010

It's really quite simple. You just open Kies and click the "update" button.
