Have you tried to turn off the "Power Saving Mode" under setting-> sound and display?  Try it and see if it works.  If the problem persists, then you need to factory reset<~exchange if this doesn't work out.

I just bought my Galaxy on Monday the 18th and it started turning off from day 1. Today it has turned off 4 times. I notice that it turns off most often when it's in my pocket or my purse..it could be related to the signal being limited in those situations? But that has never been an issue ever with any phone I have ever owned, even back in like 1995. A simple pocket or purse should not cause a phone to shut off.

It is strange...I am in Vancouver as well, I've notice a lot of people that have this problem are in BC. I am with Bell and I may go in to the store on Monday to complain if it persists through out the weekend. Too bad though, I just finished downloaded a zillion apps, it would be a huge hassle to start over.

Is this a problem with JUST the galaxy or other Android phones? Samsung is updating to Android 2.2 in November, maybe that will help?

You probably have too many background apps running on your phone.  This is the most common "shutting off" problem with smartphone.
1. Just keep your eyes on your task manager, and check how much RAM your phone is running. If RAM is above 275MB, your phone is likely to shut off twice or more per day.  BTW, normal RAM should run around 250MB or less.  Don't worry, this is common problem with any smartphones.

2. Also keep your eyes on opened active applications on your task manager, and try to end it if it's not in use.

3. Install free version of advanced task killer and try to kill off background apps(any programs which use lots of CPU, you need to kill them off everytime); it's very safe because it only kills background apps and leave core and foreground programs alone.

Since Kabby mentions it happening from day 1 I would take it to mean installed apps running in the background are not likely culprits. Besides the Android OS usually will flat out kill any required apps if it feels RAM is getting low, including ones being used. So the phone turning off seems like something it shouldn't do regardless, though I am not an android developer. Happy

Kabby, since you have some sort of regular value now for how much it turns off, maybe try doing a master reset back to factory settings and run it like that for 2-3 days, and see if problems persist (and if so, with the same intensity).

Juno's post reminded of the only time I had problems with my Omnia 2 and that was when I had all my applications rotating all 4 directions as the accelerometer moved. It seemed to really bog down the processor (and eventurally require a soft reboot). The SGS processor is faster but the accelerometer is w-a-y more sensitive. I wonder if anyone who has the processor overclocked gets this shutting down problem?

So I took the power saving mode thing off and that seemed to help. I had it in my pocket and it didn't turn off, shock! But then this morning I woke up and my phone was turned off. I had it beside my bed charging so I have no clue why it shut off by itself in my room where the signal is fine if that is a possible cause.  It also puzzles me as to why it STOPPED charging when off. Shouldn't it continue charging even if the phone is turned off? I find that very strange. Has anyone figured out why that happens?

I really like the phone otherwise, but these strange quirks have me thinking about the quality.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Are you sure it's not something you've installed? I know the instant I got home I started putting stuff on it. Just today I thought I would try APN on/off so I installed it. Yep turned stuff on and off but my SGS shut off 3 times and once I kept the screen on - it was charging and went unresponsive. I uninstalled it and things are stable(r) again.

I like that android is fragmented (I prefer customizable) but I can see how it creates mysterious problems.

Hi There... Here's the story!!

I bought my SGS a week ago in Montreal and has been working great...I go to Edmonton, Alberta on Thursday last week and bang. One evening it shuts off. Had to hold the power button down for 15 seconds before it came up. On the Friday I'm at the Bell store looking for a cover for my new SGS and the Sales man tell me he was just at a Samsung show and was told that the Bell network in Albetra is having problems!! Guess what the problem was "SGS Phone Powers Off for no reason" But was reported only having this problem in Alberta.

So he said the are working on a fix for it...

The phone shut off on me three (3) times while I was in Alberta. Never once in Montreal.

So just wait for the fix!!!!

Great phone -- Wish the Mail app that sync to Exchange server was in HTML.

I'm in Alberta - all the time. My phone doesn't turn off (other than the other day when I had APN off/on installed) however I've noticed that sometimes my data drops out. That is an network issue and I could definitely see how it would cause problem with the phone if it tried to update while the network was dropped out. Hopefully they will get that fixed quickly.

I'm in Alberta also...but running an unlocked Bell unit on Telus. Mine has done this from the beginning, I regularly kill running apps & reboot.

Last night my screen completely went- purple lines in one corner, couple other lines and the rest black. Calls still come in- but can't answer them.

Using my BB Curve for now...may go back to  (gasp) iphone- I need one I can rely on for my business...

Hey, thought I'd chime in too...

I bought two Samsung Galaxy S (gt-i9000m), one for my girlfriend and one for me.

They worked without a hitch for two months, then out of nowhere BOTH of them have been shutting down seemingly at random, many times a day. Whether it's on the night table charging, or not plugged in, or in my pocket, it doesn't seem to matter. I've done two factory resets on my phone, yet this morning in the span of 2 hours it shut off / froze twice... with no apps even installed aside from the preloaded set.

I'm baffled... This phone went from the coolest thing ever to an unreliable piece of junk, overnight. (I really like the Smart Alarm, but when your phone freezes overnight and you miss work, that's just dumb Evil ).

@nobrayn: after a factory reset, with no extra software installed, then a freeze is probably a hardware error (back to servicing Crying )

@Shredder4Life: Could still be third party software freezing the device (hence on button not reacting, only battery removal), you should try a factory reset first, try a few days without any extra software. If works okay, you have a good device, start loading software only one app a day until you figure out which one crashes your phone (the last one you installed that day)

Same issue here with Rogers Galaxy S Captivate in Manitoba.

I got the phone a little under a month ago.  Worked fine for the first two weeks then began shutting off randomly.

When its plugged in and charging it doesn't seem to shutdown (at least the last few days) but more testing needed.  But if its unplugged it will shut off randomly.  Sometimes a few hours, sometimes 15 minutes.

At first I thought it was shutting down because of the cold as I left it in my car for an hour and it was kinda chilly (first time it happened).  But since then i've had it shutdown on the kitchen table, in my pocket, etc.  Very annoying as I use the phone for business.

I almost always have wifi and gps off.  Usually bluetooth as well.

I haven't downloaded or installed any apps other than what came with the phone.  Before I start messing with it me thinks I'll take it to a Rogers kiosk or call there tech support and see what they have to say.

Other info:
model:Samsung-SGH-I896
firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernal: 2.6.29

Download the program (it's free) Load Monitor. Install it. Under its preferences check the following on... Add Notification, Only notify high load, Auto start, and most importantly Wake Lock. Maybe the Screen setting that I gave you before wasn't the solution, but these two were the changes that I made four days ago and my phone hasn't turned off at all.  Hope this helps...

This WORKS!  for me anyway.  Thank you yval9857.

I did this four days ago and haven't had it shut off since.  I turned the phone off and on a couple times during those day just to make sure I wasn't getting lucky but it has never shut off by itself since installing and configuring load monitor.

Hope this helps others as well....
