What method did you used trying to remove the gmail account?

Can you try this?

Goto [Settings] > [Accounts & sync]...

Tap on the account you wish to remove...

Tap on [Remove account]...

It'll prompt to also remove data of the related account...

I tryed its shows the popup message

Remove account
do you really want to remove this account? removing it will also delete all of its messages, contacts, and other data from phone.
proceed?

<remove account> <cancel>

i selected remove accouont

Popup displayed

Remove account
This account is required by some applications. You can only remove it by resetting the phone to factory defaults (which delets all your personal data). You do that in the settings application, unclear privacy.

i have deleted all the sata& synchronization for the selected account still i am not able to delete the account.

Maybe that's the main gmail account you used to activate your device.

Guess you've no choice but to factory reset?

I hear what you are saying. I tried a yahoo account in the social app. I created the account. used it once to chat with someone; to test it. Went back to the chat accounts - Google talk/yahoo. removed the account.

Then went to messaging and low and behold if I start typing in the 'to:' box and spell out my user name...the account details pop up. I now find this irritating...lol. I get obsessed with things that dont do as they should do!...lol

I have no idea how to delete that at all. seems to be impossible. Anyone got any ideas? Is there an app that would do this for me?

Maybe you'd like to try this:

Please be aware that doing this might clear all your messages and settings. I'm not sure as I've not done it before.
Do this at your own risk, but please give feedback. Thanks.

Goto [Settings] > [Applications], scroll to "Messaging", tap on it...

And select [Clear data]...
