I'm new to the smart phone thing.  Wife has an iPhone and I got  the Galaxy S because I wanted the larger screen.  I know I'm having teething problems 'cause it's new.  One thing I wonder is how to close an app.  Seems like after I use something and go back to the main window, the app I abandoned is still running in the Background.  Why?

It doesn't matter if something is running in the background; if you go back it will be up to date. That's multi-tasking and the iPhone doesn't do that well Big Grin

Try pressing the menu button (left soft key) and see if an exit button pops up in the context menu (some apps don't). Otherwise you can just hit the back key (right soft key) until back at the main screen. Android will close apps as they interfere with performance. Some apps still collect data in the background even if they are turned off. If you don't want that drain on your data plan, go to settings | accounts and sync then uncheck auto-sync.

Thanks for that.  I have unlimited data so that's not an issue.  It just surprises the heck outta me when I go to something - web browser for instance - and find it still on the same article or place I was in yesterday or last time I used it!

Oh, and P.S.:  I love shiny new things too!   Big Grin

If you want to close an application totally, search and download a "Task Killer" or "Task Manager" from the Android Market.

The newer firmware had a Task Manager Widget which can do that too.

I'm showing firmware 2.1 and the phone's brand new.  Don't see the task manager though.  But thanks for the info.

Press and hold on an empty spot then select Samsung Widgets and go to Program Monitor. It puts a widget on your screen that tells the number of programs running and lets you turn off all or some of them.
