OK... there's got to be a way to logout of Gmail.   I don't understand why it is so difficult to do.  Basically, I don't want to be signed in forever to gmail via my phone, and I don't want any person picking up my phone to be able to read my emails simply by tapping the Gmail app on the phone.

By logout, I mean I want the phone to ask for my password when I want to check my Gmail.

There has to be a simple solution, right?

Thanks

I think the easiest method is to install the free Advanced Task Killer app (found in the android market, made by ReChild), and run that everytime you want to quit it.

I installed the app killer, and ended the Gmail task with it.

But it does NOT logout of Gmail.

By logout, I mean that a random person picking up my phone cannot read my emails by re-opening the Gmail app.  I want it to be password protected.... like signing in to access my emails.

I ended up deleting my Google account on my phone to get rid of Gmail.  But after I did that, every time I want to use the Android market, it asks me to sign in again to my Google account.  That's ridiculous, because after I sign in, I can't sign out again.... I'm just back to the original problem I mentioned.

Again, is it just me, or is it absolutely ludicrous to think that THERE IS NO WAY TO SIGN OUT OF GOOGLE.  I mean, a random person can pick up your phone and read your personal emails and stuff because you're forever signed in to google!

I guess one possible solution is for me to create a new Google account, and just use that on my phone, but not use it for email, because it seems a lot of the essential functions on this phone (accessing the Android market for one) requires the user to be signed into a Google account.

Instead of logging out of Gmail, how about securing the phone itself ? (Settings > Location and Security > Set Unlock pattern)

Come on.  Someone has to know how to log out of gmail?? (without having to factory reset your phone).

I'm logged into two gmails for the same account and it's a pain getting told I have new mail twice in a row; one is delayed by 5 minutes so I get buzzed and told I have a new e-mail when I don't (it even does this when I check the new e-mail the first time around).

Your question is a bit confusing, but I'll try to interpret it anyway.

Google Account, delete it, or replace it with your own account in Settings > Accounts and Sync
Youtube, click the Youtube icon in the apps screen, then press Option key, My Account, replace with your info (create an account if necessary) if deletion is not an option.

The only way to completely remove a gmail account linked to your android device is to do a factory reset of the device. This will remove everything. If there is a google account linked to the device, it can not be simply removed. At least that is what I am told.

I could be wrong...

Yes, based on my experience with milestone and the galaxy S, you require a gmail account to set up your device. You can't remove it. Only a factory reset will remove your gmail settings in the device. But then again, you will need a gmail account to to set it up again. So, I guess you don't have much of a choice if you want to use an Android phone.

I don't have a fix, but I do have the same problem...sort of.

I have noticed that I have two gmail "accounts" while I have been trying to deal with sync problems between gmail and the SGS. One has the black icon, the other has the blue icon. I did the whole "factory data reset" then started to re-setup my stuff.

What I found was that social hub creates a "gmail account" on the SGS (I think the black icon) and then when you sign into app market a second "gmail account " get created on the SGS.

Now I think these two accounts are what are causeing some of the sync issues. That being said I can't figure out how to keep the two of them from happening or how to logout of them.

FOUND THIS ON A DIFFERENT SITE, I HAVE NOT TRIED IT AND HAVE NO IDEA IF IT WILL WORK USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

If you want to change your primary gmail account for Gmail, its much easier.
Do not hard reset means set to factory defaults , by erasing all data and application , instead go to
1. Settings -> Applications ->Manage Applications ->filter all
Here you have to "Clear Data" from
1. Gmail
2. Gmail Storage
3. Gppgle Apps
4. Google talk and Talk services
5. and IM. (Would be rare to have this showing unless you are using Google IM)
clearing data is much simple just click on aplication and clear data.
"
the Dev also warns that Google Storage will want to keep filling up so  do that one last before exiting Manage Applications section.
Then, of course, you must regularly restart your phone, when it comes back, you will need to enter your new chose gmail, then follow the instructions.  You also should do a *228, 2 for OTA, but may not be needed.  What may be needed is having to do a *228 , 9 (as previously instrcted at any Verizon Store when you bought the phone in the first place).
This method of changing the an Android devices primary gmail account actually works.  So let's all stop the goddamn FUD that we can't change the primary email AND LET CUSTOMERS KNOW and/or right a batch file with a shortcut in Manage Applications so that we can just stop all this bickering.  Now this next part is probably why Google, Android Market, Verizon employees, Motorola CS employees are all saying "it can't be done", is probably due to the next relatively complex procedure:
The apps PURCHASED need only be re-registered, but in order to NOT Download and pay for them again, you will have to remove your CC from the old gmail/Google Checkout and use it in Google Checkout with the NEW gmail you have chosen for your new Droid primary - sure beats re-DLing and installing all those apps.  Unfortunately the CC has to be the SAME CC you used on the old gmail account otherwise you ARE stuck with re-purchasing the apps from the Market using the NEW gmail you have chosen along with the different CC/Google Checkout.
Now, don't we all feel better about being this "open"?  I know I do.

And how do you log out of a Gmail account and log into another as well.  I went from Blackberry to this phone and I gotta tell ya, my Blackberry seemed WAY easier! Help!!! HUH?
