Last night I used the Galaxy S to navigate to a friends home and it worked better than my Nexus One with 2.2.  The GPS located my position within 3-4 seconds and located all turns along the route.  Everything seems to be working perfectly since I did the manual fix.

What manual fix ? I have also done some "manual fix", but it does not work properly.

Thanx.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.  Most of the sites that had the fix have been shut down.  I have the steps, just follow it and it should work perfectly like mine does.  If you want more info before trying it, just google search Samsung galaxy s gps fix.  There should be quite a few sites that talk about it.  It will take some searching but you should be able to find more detailed directions.

I found that this fix from xda-developers worked dramatically well on my Galaxy S.  Seems it is simply a settings issue as www.spirent-lcs.com doesn't exist:

* Step 1 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"
* Step 2 -- Open the dialer (the phone button) and enter the following: *#*#1472365#*#* . Then press "send" to open the Vibrant's LbsTestMode menu.
* Step 3 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, press ā€œApplication Settingsā€ and change ā€œOperation Modeā€ to ā€œMS Based.ā€
* Step 4 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, find ā€œSUPL/CP Settingsā€ and change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 (DO NOT use www. in front of supl !)
* Step 5 -- Reboot your phone.
* Step 6 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Check the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"

If you want to reverse these changes, the original specs are:

Operation Mode: Standalone

I already tried this fix 2 times but it didn't fix google maps, does this only fix google navigation app or should it fix normal google maps too?? because when i use normal google maps not google navigation it only jam in one place and not go as car goes..

How i should config my wifi before i open google maps...what is the best wifi connection available?? all the connections what i find are weak, and that's why my google maps jam in one place and does not go as car goes...very god damn annoying....

I have wifi open before i open google maps but how do i find good wifi connection...that's the main problem here...

Navigation with any app doesn't use wifi it uses GPS signals from satellites.  When you navigate, turn your GPS on, plug in your address and start navigating.  When I use maps to follow my position it works great.  Same thing with Pro Google Maps, and Navigation.  When you are in your car navigating you need to make sure your phone has a clear view of the sky or you will not lock onto the satellites.  I would turn wifi off to conserve battery while navigating in a car.  Your problem all along may have been your phone was not able to lock onto satellites.  If you hold your phone in your hand or have it on the seat while trying to navigate it will not work unless you have a convertible.  I have a car suction cup mount I attach to the windshield so my phone can lock on to satellites. I think quite a few of the people that complain about gps problems don't know what they are doing. If your phone doesn't have line of sight with a satellite it can't lock onto its signal.

You are confusing wifi and GPS.  Wifi is used to connect to an IP address in order to use the internet.  Wifi is available at coffee shops, book stores, your home via a router, and many other public places.  It can be accessed by pressing menu>wireless and network>wifi settings>wifi.  In this screen you can turn your wifi on/off.

GPS is used to connect to satellites that orbit the Earth.  Several governments from around the world have launched a GPS network for their citizens and military to use to navigate around the world.  In order for your phone to navigate properly your phone needs to communicate with 3 of these satellites at one time to triangulate your position.  Your phone must have somewhat of a clear view of the sky in order for it to communicate with these satellites, it will not work indoors usually. If your phone is not able to communicate with these satellites your phone will automatically try to find your location using cell towers through your 3G data service.  So sometimes you can navigate even if you don't have a clear view of the sky. To access GPS press menu>location and security>use GPS satellites.

When you are within range of a wifi connection your phone will usually ask if you would like to connect to wifi but if you are in a car you will probably never connect because you will move out of range too quickly.  This is why I turn wifi off when I am in my car.  Wifi would help your phone identify its position if you stayed connected long enough for it to determine where you are at.  If you want to navigate outside of a cities limits, where no wifi is available, for example how would your phone do this?  The only way for it to accomplish this is to communicate with satellites.

I recently took a trip from Phoenix, Arizona to Los Angeles.  Obviously there is no wifi access in the desert.  My phone tracked my position all the way and led me to my hotel and back to my home with my wifi being turned off the entire time.  If you have any more questions, Google GPS and read some articles about it.  It is very interesting.

I don't think my GPS works at all. Sometimes the phone finds approximate locations using the network, but any app I have downloaded that is a pure GPS app does not work at all. By contrast, my iPhone  4 (which was torn from my hands in a robbery) found exact GPS coordinates even when I was indoors.

More than likely your iphone4 was getting your position from wifi or cell towers, because it is very difficult to obtain and keep a satellite fix while indoors with any device.

Best way to see if it is working is, go outside in a fairly open area.  Turn off wifi and 3G/2G and open maps.  Press menu while in maps and press my location.  It should find where you are within a minute or two.  Also, the phone should say searching for satellites while it is trying to determine your location and make a connection to the satellites.  If you do not get a fix then your phone is running very slowly or you have a GPS problem.  Let me know what happens.

What happens is that nowadays, the majority of the smartphones got weak internal gps receivers, so they are dependeable on A-gps.

A-gps will get a sattelite fix throw celular network via internet connection

I dont have a data account, so I disabled a-gps on my smartphone ( still didnt buy the sgs).

I just connect my phone with a compact external bluetooth gps receiver with a sirfstatIII chipset. it works great. no extra internet costs and no need for a data acount....and I save battery.
Btw I use Garmin mobile to navigate...seems to be Google maps will always require internet connection, I dont know I never used it. Garmin mobile quicks it....

As I understand it, google maps and google navigation do not store all their maps on the phone, so when you ask for position, unless it is somewhere you have asked before, google will try to use wifi to download the required map. This is because maps contain a lot of data and it could be expensive to download using 3g,

To use the positioning satelites for GPS, go to settings>location and security>and touch "use GPS Satelites", if in addition you want to use A-GPS, where the satelite information is assisted by information from the mobile towers, then also touch on "use wireless networks".

Hope that this info is a help.

I scouted around the web to learn more about the navigation related problems of the galaxy s. It seems they are well known and even mentioned on the wikipedia page for the phone model. Samsung says it's working hard on the problem and will have an update soon. But the problem has been around for a few years on several recent samsung models,  so I doubt it is an easy fix. On some forums people speculate about whether it is a hardware or software issue, but the samsung admission of the problem was silent on the cause. I experimented with turning wireless off, with trying open locations, with changing settings according to a "fix" posted on a bunch of websites, but nothing helped. So, well, I 'm jumping ship back to the iPhone. It's not the only issue, but the single biggest one for me.

I tried this fix and it really doesn't work at all. The key to this fix is in bold. When I'm in a place with really good cell coverage, I do get pretty accurate "GPS" (Inverted comma's because it's not GPS). However I spend a good deal of my time in a village with poor to non-existent cell coverage -  at this point the "GPS" can be out by anything up to 2km. Curiously, it always seems to place me at the nearest cell tower!

When I'm in spotty cell coverage, my location will jump from pretty near to where I'm standing to pretty far, just by walking a few paces. If this fix worked without "Use Wireless Networks" set, I'd believe the GPS works, but it doesn't.

Try it - turn off "Use Wireless Networks" and hey presto - no navigation at all!
