Hi Guy's ..new poster here!
I did the " change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276"  etc.. etc.. FIX

That night, I drove home from my GF's house 26 miles away from mine ...
As a test,I put on the Navigation on my new Galaxy S .. and set it to "Satellite View"
I have to say, I have NEVER had such an enlightening journey! It worked a treat .. turn by turn the graphics were STUNNING !!!!!! .. I could see fields, coastline. houses. building I never knew existed!! It was AMAZING .. Truely the BEST NAVIGATION I have EVER SEEN!! ..but ..

A funny quirky thing happened  after I had done the FIX .. ... ..
The USB connection Icon stayed on the top left of the phone even though it obviously wasn't connected by USB!! That USB icon stayed on the phone till I switched it off to do a reboot the next morning, as ,after such a pleasant journey the night before.... You guessed it ..
"Searching for GPS" appeared !!!!!
(I mention the USB story wondering if it has anything to do with the problem ..?)
ARRRRGGGGG ..

That was 2 nights ago .. Since then I have had "Searching for GPS"  and that monotone voice saying "Data connection lost"  etc ..

Has anyone actually got this to work perfectly all the time? and if so HOW?
When it worked, the images on the Amoled screen were truely the best!!

Will Frodo or whatever it's called maybe fix this?  .. I don't know . but having experienced what it CAN do,(even for that 1 night) ..I want more!!
Off to reset back to the original GPS settings and see what happens tomorrow tonight on my journey home!

Jeez ..this is very frustrating!!

After step 3 press the back button to get back to the main menu of the LbsTestMode app, the one with the 5 gray buttons which are:
Get Position Test
Applicaiton Settings < you presed this button in step 3 >
SUPL/CP Settings < press here in step 4 >
Test Application
Delete GPS Data

The network connection is use do download the ephemeris tables that contain the orbits of the satellites.  If the GPS unit has these it can scan only for the sattelites in view.  If it doesn't then it has to do a full acqsition from an unknown location, time and date.  This takes a looooong time.  It is worth the downloading of the ephemeris, even once, the speed benefit is astonishing.

Cheers

How do you download the ephemeris to your phone? I own a Captivate. Thanks.

Also try clearing the GPS stored data so it does a cold start. If you've moved far (like 250K) from your last use, it will try to find the other satellites.

I found that this fix from xda-developers worked dramatically well on my Galaxy S.  Seems it is simply a settings issue as www.spirent-lcs.com doesn't exist:

* Step 1 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"
* Step 2 -- Open the dialer (the phone button) and enter the following: *#*#1472365#*#* . Then press "send" to open the Vibrant's LbsTestMode menu.
* Step 3 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Based.”
* Step 4 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, find “SUPL/CP Settings” and change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 (DO NOT use www. in front of supl !)
* Step 5 -- Reboot your phone.
* Step 6 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Check the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"

If you want to reverse these changes, the original specs are:

Operation Mode: Standalone
SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com
PORT: 7275

I can't get these steps to work. Step two, type *#*#1472365#*#* in the dialer; as soon as I hit that last *, it all wipes itself away like i never typed anything at all.

Welcome to the forum. We're a friendly group. Please help us stay that way by checking out the forum rules. Also check out the how to thread for some great tips or use the search function so see if someone’s asked your question before.

I downloaded SGS tools from Market. You can use the codes even if you don't have your device rooted. I have had the same experience as you when typing in the codes, but this app seems to work all the time.

Hello all

I am rather new here Happy. Ihave Samsung Galaxy S phone with Froyo 2.2 (Froyo.XWJPA). All seems to be more or less ok with this phone , only 1 thing is not working. it is GPS. Of course i switch it on. but when i tried to use any map (Mobile map 10) i cannot catch any satellite signal(even at outside area). I have tried to use some setting entering with this funny code #*#*....... but nothing helps. I dont want to use any google/etc navigation, just pure GPS without Wifi.

If anyone has some working solution i will be very thankfull.

thanks

Cya

There are a few apps that invoke just the GPS. I have GPS Test and GPS status. I also have Tricorder which is a lot of fun but pretty well drains the battery.

Hello

Thanks for you reply.
Yesterday i have install from Market GPS test and somehow all started to work. I see 7 satellites. i dont know how it is possible but.... all is ok. Now only a battle with Maps and 'finito'.
You are right about battery, when running GPs, Gps test etc, 1 day is maximum.

Thanks a lot for support

I have the same issue.  There doesn't appear to be a solution.  I'll see 5 or 6 satellites, but not more than 30% strength on any of them.  While that may be sufficient to pinpoint where you are on a map, it's useless in navigation applications.

Buy a GPS.  My Garmin never has a problem telling where I am.

There are some people on here that say certain navigation apps work better than others, and I believe that, however the actual GPS hardware built into the device can't be helped even with the best software.

I apologise if my response seemed negative.  I assure you I meant no disrespect... I'm simply bitter about the device's poor GPS performance.
