Have you bumped it because it sounds like your radio (the cell phone part) has stopped working. Try pulling the battery and leaving it out for awhile to see if there was an electrical glitch.

I didnt do anything - it says emergency calls only. I reset it and still the same problem. Its the same with other sim cards and has the fully updated software.

Any ideas?

i bought mine secondhand as someone got a new contract and then sold it so am wondering if they got it locked but its been fine for a month.

@alastair77: A phone is locked, or unlocked, and usually doesn't interchange without a reason (not even from the provider's network commands)
So either it's locked:
You happened to be using the correct same provider as the one you bought it from, but now something happened with your sim (changed subscription ? changed network ?), then it's normal not to be able to use the phone as before.
Unlocked: Ouch, serious problem, as you tested with other sim cards. I suspect the sim reader isn't working on your SGS (hence the same behaviour as a invalid/missing sim)

Hi,

your phone may be locked.
Check Simlock and Network lock is OFF, dial: *#7465625#
What can you see on the screen?
Check your firmware, dial: *#1234#
If you are on Eclair (2.1) or Froyo(2.2), you can unlock your phone, read this.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906255.
When you read this issue, you see, the first step: ROOTING.
Try this, you may be helped.

All locks are OFF

If it has been stolen and the network locked it through imei number and informed all other networks to block - then there is nothing that i can do - so the unlocking guy told me. Is this true?

thanks

Hi,

"OFF" means your phone is unlocked.
