thanks so much for the reply.
I have tried via wifi, sitting in my home office now with brilliant reception.

I get to the "communicating with Google servers to set up your account...."

Then "can't establish a reliable data connection to the server"

sigh Crying

Hi,
I have had the same issue - can get to gmail via url (using wifi or phone ).
However I cannot get to Calendar, Email, Gmail, Apps or anything that requires me to sign in to google account.
I'm in Australia.
Frustrated as I love the phone in every other way.
Just so you know you are not alone Happy

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but did you registered with the same gmail during the first time you started your device?

Thanks for the reply Omnian.
Well I do have a couple of google accounts.
I have logged on via URL (wifi and otherwise) using a different one, but never via the "sign in" to "setup google account" as required by calendar, gmail and apps.

I'm feeling quite confused and as if I am going around in circles, sigh.  There must be something basic I am missing.... Embarrased

I don't know if this will work. So, you decide whether you want to try this.

Decide on 1 Gmail account.

Factory reset your device and use that 1 Gmail account to register your device.

If it works, then add the other Gmail.

Again, I do not know whether this will work, it's just a test and only if you don't mind.

surely a dumb question but what do I lose with a factory reset?  My sim is not big enough for all my contacts btw.

answering my own question.
Just saved all contacts via Kies to the Phonebook on PC on Kies.

So I am hoping if I do a factory reset I can then just do a "transfer to device" from Kies to phone.....

Answering your own question  Big Smile

You can also use this method and copy the "00001.vcf" to your external memory card (/sdcard/sd).

wahooooooooo you LEGEND!
so:

1.  backup all data (in my case via Kies)
2.  factory reset
3.  via gmail icon sign into gmail account - it worked....
4.  now to connect to Kies again and retrieve my contacts, messages, media

Thank you so much.
Hope Kies doesn't upset things!   Big Grin

@machoulis:

I think previously someone asked what country you are based - in case apps not available there?

I get my Android apps and Samsung apps from the icon on the phone.

I cannot get them from the Kies application on the PC.

For me (in Australia) there are only 9 Samsung apps.  There are of course thousands of Android apps.

Not sure if this will help.

You don't connect to your PC to get to Android market. You activate your phone with your google account and then you can get into market after entering your gmail account. You can't get into market without gmail. I had a google account but hadn't activated my gmail and I couldn't use market until I did.

Plus market doesn't work in some countries.

Hello,

Did somebody have an answer to this problem yet? I have exactly the same problem with my phone (galaxy s i9000). I had to do a factory reset but now i cannot setup my account anymore on Gmail and Android. The phone replies:  "cannot make a good data connection to server maybe temporarely or your phone is not capable for this data service. If problem persists contact customerservice."
I do not have a dataplan. Only connect to internet via wifi. Internetconnection is working and i can log in to my account via internet.
Tried another factory reset whithout my sim card installed. Still the same problem. When i started using the phone just after i bought it everything went well the first time. Am i doing something wrong?

Have a prepaid orange card with no dataplan. I live in romania but like i said everything was working fine.

Please help!

Hello found the answer for my problem by checking some other website. There seems to be a difference between a factory reset with the 3 buttons and a reset via the menu method. Use the menu method and the problem is solved!

Thanks for following up with how you resolved this. I wasn't aware that the factory reset and the 3 button reset are that different!
