I just got the samsung captivate galaxy S about a week ago. So far I love the phone but I've been having a problem. Some info beforehand - AT&T carrier, SGH I897, firmware 2.1 - update 1, build number ECLAIR.UCJH7

Whenever I go to plug the phone into my computer to put music on it I can't get the computer to recognize the phone. I've tried many many times, and succeeded twice. The first time I succeeded I don't know what happened that caused it to work. I was simply reconnecting it for about the 3rd time. Before I succeeded I had tried restarting both the pc and the phone, and turning the phone off, plugging it in, then turning it on. Checked de-bugging setting.

The second time I was successful it was right after I reinstalled the drivers. I had done the power off then plug in then power on before success this time.

I'm about an hour into my 3rd attempt and I've had it. I can't figure the problem out. It is so inconsistent I feel as though it's a crapshoot to get music files on my phone. After paying what I did I feel like it should work every time. I don't want to mess with kies, I can navigate my phone and do all the things I want to (as of now) with mass storage mode.

I am willing to work with kies if it means a consistent connectivity, but from the research I was doing it sounds like kies is a whole different set of issues.

Any ideas?

Use USB Mass Storage mode after connecting to the PC. However, this requires another step, you have to turn it on by sliding the notification menu down, click on the USB connected menu, and press Mount. After that, one or two new drives are detected by your computer.

After my update to JM2 firmware though, I have to connect the USB cable, disconnect, and THEN connect the USB cable before I can get the drives to appear though. Maybe you have the same problem ? It's still a consistent connection then though, if you know the procedure. No need for KIES at all (except for updating firmware).

I am having the same problem.  Windows Vista does not recognize the device when I connect the USB cable that came with the phone.  I have already select the Mass Storage option.  I don't see an option for "mount".

The option for Mount is AFTER you select USB Mass Storage mode. It's in the notification area after you click on USB connected again. If it doesn't come up, disconnect cable, connect cable, choose USB Mass storage again. Now go to notification area again, click on USB and then Mount.

Mount is on your SGS not computer, just in case Kimputer didn't seem clear.

an alternative is something like dropbox or using an SD card that you physically place in your computer to transfer media.

Forgot to specify that I have been mounting it. I'd love it to just work like my blackberry did, simple click and drag into the phone's SD card file. I guess that can be achieved by using a microSD reader, but I'd prefer to not have to take my SD card out everytime I get a new song (2-3 times a day sometimes).

Thanks for the replies guys, unfortunately this problem is being stubborn..

If you mounted it successfully on your SGS, then check if your computer is recognising it correctly by using Disk Management (use Start > Run > Diskmgmt.msc or right mouse click on My Computer icon > Manage > browse to Disk Management)
If you see the drive appear every time you mount it, and disapppear every time you disconnect it, it's a good sign. You just have to assign it a drive letter, or you have to change the drive letter to a non-conflicting one (maybe a network drive already has it). Right mouse click on the drive that's appeared, and choose Change Drive Letter and Path, click Change, now choose a drive letter that's not been used already. Repeat for the other drive (one is SGS internal memory, one is the SD expansion)

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

That pops up in the lower right corner whenever I try to mount it, and when I plug it in.

I checked disk management and it does nothing different when the phone is connected/disconnected.

The GS driver may have conflicted with other devices.

Can you try it on another USB port?

It's also handy to know what happens on any OTHER computer. This is because USB Mass Storage does NOT require any drivers for Windows 2000 and above. If it works on another random computer, it means you have a driver problem.
If it doesn't work on another computer, your SGS is at fault.

Did you plug in any other USB devices before it fails?

I tried it on another computer. Same OS and same problem.

My blackberry did just fine the day before I bought the SGS. Never had any problems with it the whole time I owned it (2 years) so I don't see how it could be the computer...

Any way to get this specific SGS to work? It looks like I might have to exchange it for a new one...

It's HIGHLY unlikely that 2 different computers face a sudden and similar USB driver issue. Therefore, I'm sure if you connect your SGS to any other random computer (if you have access to a third one ?), it will give you the same error message.
The conclusion is, I'm sad to say, your SGS is defect. Especially if you didn't impact normal operation (root the device or something), and you already did a factory reset, there's nothing more to do then return it to the service point. I'm afraid, that USB Mass Storage is a vital operation that should work flawlessly, and maybe you will find even more errors if you continued using it (for instance, KIES, and maybe somewhere during a firmware update it will get stuck, and you still have to return it anyways).

Hi,

At the moment I have the 2.1-1update1 Firmaware is that helps.
I've had the phone for a good two weeks or so and it's been fine up until this week.
I'm already use to transferring files through the My Computer and not through Kies.

But recently my phone began to not recognize on either of my computers. Vista. Xp. etc.
All that pops up on the computer is the "USB Device Not Recognized" sign. It might have been I unplugged it during the usb without ejecting it properly. (Yeah, worse decision ever.)

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the usb through the Device Manager, but that still hasn't it gotten it back to work normally.

Before this occurred, I'd normally do the Mount procedure on the phone itself to connect to the computer. Now every time I connect my phone to my computer, I don't get that option of mounting anymore.

Also going through settings, applications, usb, and selecting the different options of mounting, or kies, does not help connect to the computer.

Is there anyway of fixing this problem so my phone could recognize my computer once again? I tried factory resetting it, but that hasnt helped.

I hear a lot of problems about connecting the phone to the computer but that usually relates to kies or actually connecting the phones without any faults to it. I haven't read any posts relating directly to my situation, where the actual phone is not even giving me the mount option...

I'd appreciate if I heard some feedback before I take it to the tmobile store.
Thanks for reading.
