Hi.  I have a rooted Samsung Captivate (SGH-I897) running Android 2.2 that I've been having some trouble with.

Whether I'm using it or not at the time, the phone spontaneously freezes up, I get an error vibration (one buzz followed by three quick buzzes), the screen goes black, then a few minutes later it starts up again (from the point that the home screen first appears, after the Galaxy S logo in a normal start-up) and the same thing happens again a few minutes after that, repeatedly until either the process runs out my battery (which it does very quickly) or I shut the phone off and leave it alone for a while.

I had this problem for one day a few months ago, and it cleared up and didn't come back until a few days ago.  The first time, I had popped out the battery to put my SIM card in my old phone, and when I gave the Captivate a try a few hours later, it worked fine.  This time, taking out the battery and leaving it alone only solves the issue for a few hours.

Also different this time is that when I start the phone up, I often get an error message stating "Process system is not responding", with the Force Close and Wait options.  I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary following this message, aside from this issue I've been having, which can appear anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours following the message, depending on how long my phone was left alone before I tried turning it on.

Any insight you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Good description, what info can you supply on how you rooted and files/programs used?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take advantage of having Google on your phone! Save all contacts to GMail and they never get lost, wiped, replaced etc.

Titanium Backup for apps and data. SMS Backup & Restore for messages.

I believe it was this one, though I couldn't swear to it.  I still have the folder on my desktop, with two different root programs in it, and I don't remember which one I used.  The other one is SuperOneClick.  I know I wouldn't have tried to double root it or anything, but the programs themselves both look familiar, so I really have no idea which one it is.  I wish I could say for certain, but I did this back at the end of January, and I think the problem first happened in mid-February.

As for the rooting itself, what I remember is that I had to enable USB debugging, connect my phone to my computer, and run the program.  At some point, I remember having to specify that I wanted to enable installing third-party apps, and I think I passed on enabling other root privileges when I did that.  As a side note, my computer hasn't recognized my phone in mass storage mode since shortly after that.  I haven't tried connecting it to another computer, so I can't say if that's an issue with my phone or with my computer.
