Ringtone volume is fine to me, I've not even done setting on it, just use it as default.

Can you try another tone?

I noticed this today as well. I was talking to someone on the phone, when suddely she got EXTREMELY quiet, so I turned my volume up to max, but still could not make out a word she was saying. It was so quiet, but I could tell she was talking. It seemed to be sporatic, as the volume went back to normal for a second half way through her sentence, and then went quiet again.

I had 4 bars, so I dont think it was a reception issue...

Border, Jemsheed,

In the replies of this blog-entry
    http://androidspin.com/2010/08/17/how-to-increase-your-samsung-vibrants-volume-beyond-full/
someone refers to "HAC mode" in the Call settings option. I looked for it on mine but didn't exist, however, others report that it is. Can you check it, and give it a try?

Regards.

Maybe it is silly but have you remove the cover from the screen?..it dramaticLly reduces the sound

I know that this post is quite old, but I wanted to post that what machloulis told is quite right. I did the test with the screen cover. Removing it solve the problem.

What do you mean by removing the cover from the screen? Do you mean the clear plastic film that was on it when you bought the phone?

I had exactly the same low volume problem - but now solved.  Tried many things suggested, but then checked the speaker slot.  It had a transparent plastic cutout over it - probably from new. This was not removed when the main full screen protective cover removed. Once removed great volume - I even have to trun it down.
